The Surprising Health Benefits Of Champagne

If diamonds are a girl’s BEST friend… then “the bubbly” is a close second!
It’s time to pop bottles and celebrate, because I have some terrific news for all of you champagne lovers out there.

Hallelujah! Cheers! Salute! Prost! I’ll raise a glass to that.
Reading University conducted a study in 2013, which revealed that drinking 3 glasses of champagne per week can help prevent memory loss and delay the onset of diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
The key factor? The grapes.
Champagne is made with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. Both are packed with phenolics, which help regulate signals in the cortex and hippocampus. These areas of the brain are connected with learning and memory.
One author of the study, James Spencer, who is a food and nutritional sciences professor at the University of Reading, commented that:
“These exciting results illustrate for the first time that the moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning, such as memory. However, our research shows that Champagne, which lacks flavonoids, is also capable of influencing brain function through the actions of smaller phenolic compounds, previously thought lack biological activity.”
As you age, proteins in your cortex and hippocampus start to diminish. However, the compounds found in champagne can help bring back these protein levels to normal. This is especially true if you have dementia or Alzheimer’s!
But, before you reach for the bubbly, it is vital to note that this study was conducted on animals – NOT humans. Therefore, the results may not apply to you. The study also doesn’t mention how the other elements of champagne (sugar), could impact your health.
So, what are you supposed to make of all this? Well, as with most things… MODERATION.
“We encourage a responsible approach to alcohol consumption and our results suggest that a very low intake of one to two glasses a week can be effective,” states James Spencer.
Until researchers can convert these discoveries into humans, it is best to pop an occasional bottle of champagne… perhaps for the celebration of a birthday or job promotion. But don’t worry, you can still get your polyphenols and help your brain by reaching for foods such as cocoa or blueberries.
