The Start to Your Morning Routine You REALLY Need

If you haven’t seen at least one article about the amazing results you’ll get from starting your day with warm lemon water in your Facebook news feed, you may be living under a rock. The citrusy wonder drink is the biggest thing to have hit the wellness community since quinoa.
Most articles will tell you that drinking warm lemon water will:
Yada, yada, yada…
I’ve known all of this for years, but continued to cling ferociously to my morning cup of joe. I needed it. I wanted it. I was infatuated with it.
My caffeine-fueled mornings worked wonders for decades. The flavor, the smell and the kick made me feel like I could accomplish anything that was set in front of me. I would plow through my mornings and right on through to the afternoon with just one 12 ounce mug of coffee and a healthy breakfast.
Then my cup started to get a bit too full.
All of the sudden (it seemed), I was a wife, a mother of two boys, a member of my local Mom’s Club, the chairwoman for my town’s Youth Services Commission, a writer and a health coach. Also, I had just turned 40. My ability to move effortlessly through my mornings with coffee as my co-pilot started to falter. I grew impatient with my kid’s inability to get things done at the pace I felt necessary. I found myself yelling, getting red in the face morning after morning, just to get my oldest son in the car. We were going to be LATE! I started scaring them and myself with my outbursts and tantrums.
All the while, I knew the culprit was my unwillingness to change my morning routine.
I knew that I needed to replace the caffeine craze with something more calming, so I moved on to green tea. With less caffeine and a multitude of health benefits, it seemed like a good option. After a few days of my first taste of green, I felt a little more relaxed. However, I still couldn’t get through the morning without yelling. So I switched one more time to the (yikes) no-caffeine warm drink that was all the rage. I’ve recommended it to clients time after time, but I had never been brave enough to make the leap myself.
What a difference a drink can make.
After a couple of days, my patience levels had risen while my stress levels had plummeted. I now find myself taking the time to listen to my kid’s reasons for their actions instead of jumping on their every fault.
I still get everything done, but at a more reasonable pace and at less of a cost to my family’s happiness. When no other benefits of warm lemon water could get me to stop using coffee as my first line of defence, the love for my kids finally made me see the light. I still enjoy a cup of coffee a little later in the day, because let’s be real here, the flavor is amazing. It’s just no longer part of my morning ritual.
So, if you are a busy mama that finds herself feeling beyond stressed every morning, give warm lemon water a week. See if it boosts your happy levels as much as it did mine.
