The Scary Truth About Food Education In Schools

There is something pretty horrifying I need to share with you.

Recently, a friend of mine was visiting his hometown state of Indiana and stopped by a local elementary school to visit his sister who is a physical education teacher.

During his visit to the school, he swung by the cafeteria to find out what they are recommending for kids to eat these days.

What he found was nothing short of appalling.

There was a giant chart to teach kids what to eat “less,” “enough,” “more” and “plenty” of.

The eat less chart was full of fats, oils and sweets.

The eat enough chart was full of milk products.

The eat more chart was full of fruit and vegetables.

The eat plenty chart was full of breads.

If you have been following this blog for some time – the flaws in this chart are probably obvious.

Nonetheless, I think it’s important to point out just how flawed this chart is.

The four groups that these foods are broken into are completely ridiculous.

Batching sweets and fats in the same category is like batching cocaine and spinach in the same category.

Sweets (specifically, excessive sugar) is one of the leading causes for the childhood obesity, rates being around 17% in the U.S. and fats (the right kind, of course), on the other hand, are one of the most important sources of nutrients for counteracting obesity.

Don’t get me started on the recommended 6 servings of bread a day… that is one guaranteed way to put on excess fat extremely fast.

I don’t point out this flawed system to just complain about this broken system.

I am pointing it out to empower you as a parent to help your child make educated and informed decisions about food.

The categories that these foods are being broken down in to make no sense when you look at them from a scientific standpoint of what is healthiest for a human to consume.

There is no such thing as a meat or milk group. What does exist are macronutrients.

There are 3 macronutrients. Protein. Fats. Carbohydrates.

Some are healthier than others.

Your job then, as a parent, should be to teach you kids what these healthy macronutrients are and what they are not.

Sadly, you cannot rely on your child’s school to teach your kid about healthy nutrition.

This responsibility falls on your shoulders as a parent.

The more we learn about the relationship between the gut and the brain, the more we realize that what your kid is eating is directly affecting their performance as a student.

Get educated, get involved and let’s fix this system one educated child at a time.
