Flax seeds were first cultivated in 3000 BC by the Babylonians. In the 8th century, King Charlemagne actually passed laws requiring his subjects to consume them because he believed in their benefits so strongly.
Flax seeds became popular in modern society when a German biochemist named Johanna Budwig began using flaxseed oil to treat cancer in the 1950’s. She would put her patients on a very strict diet high in fiber with lots of fruits, vegetables, and flax oil mixed with cottage cheese and milk. She claimed that after 3 months her patients experienced tumor shrinkage and all felt better.
Flax is amazing and so easy to use!
Blood Pressure and Hypertension
Suffer from headaches? In a study done by Greek researchers they found that flaxseed oil may help lower blood pressure and problems associated with hypertension.
Another study in Canada found that,
“…flaxseed induced one of the most potent antihypertensive effects achieved by a dietary intervention.”
Flax seeds also have a protective effect against certain cancers because they disrupt events leading to cancerous cell production.
Current research suggests that dietary intervention may be one of the most important keys to preventing certain cancers. At Southern Illinois University researchers found that using flaxseed, the richest vegetable source of omega-3 fatty acids and phytoestrogen lignans, may be effective in preventing ovarian cancer.
Researchers at the University Of Pennsylvania found that mice who were fed flaxseed were able to tolerate higher levels of radiation and experienced decrease levels of oxidative stress and lung injury. This could be an important discovery for those who are undergoing radiation treatment due to cancer and wish to avoid the potential damage that can be caused by such procedures.
A study done by multiple universities in India showed that flax seeds has potential in helping diabetics regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Their high fiber content of flax seeds helps our body have healthy and regular bowel movements.
Because they are full of omega-3s, flax seeds are a great heart food. Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, essential because our body doesn’t make them; we have to eat them. They help the cardiovascular system by normalizing our heartbeat and acting as anti-inflammatories.
