You are right thinking that the lack of exercise and eating too much has to do with the obesity epidemic. But it turns out that there is more to our growing waistline than too much food and too little movement.
A fascinating study conducted by York University in Toronto compared 36,400 American adults between 1971 and 2009 and 14,419 adults between 1988 and 2006. They looked at the macronutrient intake, calorie input and amount of exercise for each participant.
The results were shocking. Turns out that even those who had identical numbers for each of the 3 factors had a BMI 10% higher. Looks like 40-year-olds today would have to eat less and exercise more to prevent weight gain compared to 40-year-olds back in 1971.
It’s More Than Just Calories
The study indicated that there may be other factors contributing to the obesity epidemic than just diet and exercise. Even those who are eating and exercising the same as the people nearly 50 years ago are getting larger.
The calories in vs calories out concept doesn’t seem to explain the problem. There must be other factors affecting us today causing weight gain.
Other Factors Leading To Weight Gain
Stress is another epidemic that most people are experiencing on a daily basis. Living an average lifestyle balancing jobs, school, family and friends and trying to keep your head above water, chances are, you are chronically stressed like most people.
The problem is that chronic stress – whether it comes from work, home, school, or everywhere else – creates a fight-or-flight response in your body. This can boost your hunger long-term and trigger overeating.
When you are stressed, you are also more likely to reach for sugary snacks and other junk. Why? It’s all natural. Biologically we are designed to need glucose for quick energy to fight off a lion attacking us. The problem is that we are not cavemen anymore. There are no lions, just simple every day stresses coming at you constantly. Your body may think it needs lots of glucose, but in reality, you just need to de-stress.
Our environment is rapidly changing and is much different than it was even 50 years ago. We are a generation of products, chemicals and unnatural stuff. BPA, PCBs, phthalates, triclosan, pesticides and fire retardants are everywhere just to name a few.
But what does environmental harm and chemicals have to do with your weight? A lot more than you think! These ingredients are structurally similar to estrogen. Guess what estrogen can do? You’ve guessed it, too much estrogen (or estrogen-like substance) can lead to weight gain.
So it is about food too. Except it is not simply about calories and macronutrients, but the quality of your food. Instead of real food, today we are eating food-like substances that are filled with additives and preservatives and are highly processed. Most of these foods didn’t even exist 50 years ago, let alone way back in the day.
Overly processed ingredients, processed sugar, pesticides, preservatives, food colorings, unnatural additives and so on may trick your brain into thinking they are delicious treats, but this could not be further from the truth. These foods can all lead to overeating and weight gain (not to mention inflammation and health problems).
The pharmaceutical industry is thriving while the population is dying. There are more medications around than ever before. They are being prescribed left and right even in cases when it is unnecessary and your problem could be resolved by a simple lifestyle change.
