The REAL reason you’re sick and tired (until now) – Saturday Strategy

There is something I do every week or so that helps me stay at the top of my game. It gives me a boost in certain vitamins and minerals that I would otherwise be deficient in, despite my healthy lifestyle.

DID YOU KNOW: According to a 2011 report, a whopping 90% of Americans fall short of key nutrients that they need for optimum health.

That’s 9 out of 10 people in your family, neighborhood, community, city… and many of you reading this (such as myself) happen to live in one of the wealthiest nations in the world. Why are we walking around deficient in vitamins and minerals that should be so abundantly available?

I do my best to head into the IV clinic weekly to get certain vitamin shots. Vitamin D, Zinc, magnesium, etc. I can tell from the blood tests I get a couple of times a year what nutrients I am not getting enough of.

A lot of people see me getting vitamin shots and wonder why I choose to get them when I already eat so healthy. You may be one of the people that assume that because I juice, workout and eat very clean that I must already be a superhuman.

But I’m only half-superhuman. 🙂

Some people even stop following me because they think I must be a fake. I understand the confusion, but let’s clear things up…

Here’s the truth.

You CAN majorly transform your health by changing your diet and filling it with nutritious foods.

BUT…

The fact is, our food isn’t as healthy or nutrient dense as it once was. Our soil is not as chock-full of vitamins and minerals as it was in the generations prior. It’s sad.

What Has Happened To Our Soil?

Well, as devastating as it is to hear – our soil is nutritionally depleted. The following practices have drastically reduced the amount of vitamins and minerals that were once found abundantly in our soil. Eating a carrot or a head of broccoli now is not the same as it was 50, or even 20 years ago.

  • Herbicides
  • Pesticides
  • Fungicides
  • Roundup
  • Genetically modified seeds
  • Conventional farming practices 

Conventional farming and the use of GMOs has led to a major resistance problem. Superweeds and resistant pests are becoming ever more rampant across farmlands and are causing a need for STRONGER and more toxic chemicals to keep them under check. Our farms and produce are covered with more toxic chemicals than ever before in history.

When workers are spraying these on crops, they wear thick masks so as not to inhale the fumes. And yet many assume these are safe to ingest when you bite into raw produce. That’s just crazy!

It is crucial that we make up for the lack of nutrients in our diet by adding a few practices that may not have been necessary for previous generations, but are becoming more and more necessary for us.

The Benefit of Supplements

 

Supplementing, either through whole-food vitamins and minerals or through vitamin shots, is one way to get an adequate amount of important nutrients.

When tested, the most common nutrients people tend to be deficient in are:

  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin D
  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • B12 

Deficiencies in these nutrients are linked to many of the most common ailments that are affecting Americans today.

Magnesium

Magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical transactions in your body. It is important for proper energy creation, deep sleep, enzyme function, DNA and RNA, mineral balance and more.

Zinc

Zinc is vital for proper immune system function. With poor levels of zinc one is more prone to colds and other illness. Zinc also plays a role in cell division, cell growth, healing and the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Vitamin D

 

Vitamin D is actually a hormone and not a true vitamin. There is a receptor for it in every cell in your body. It is created in the skin when you spend time out in the sun. People who spend a lot of time indoors or in cold climates tend to have lower levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is important in the prevention of cancer. Research has shown that women with good levels have a 50% less chance of developing breast cancer in their life.  

Tip for proper vitamin D absorption: Sleep in a dark room and turn off electronics within an hour of bedtime. If you do not spend enough time in the dark at night your body won’t absorb vitamin D properly.

Iron

 

Iron is an essential element for all life on earth. It is an important mineral for proper transfer of oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. It is found mostly in your red blood cells. Iron is also important for the conversion of blood sugar into energy.

Iron can be found in good quality red meats, clams, etc. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you may consider taking a high quality iron supplement.

Calcium

Calcium and vitamin D work together to promote good bone health. It is also essential for blood clotting, blood pressure, brain function and communication between cells.

B12

 

Vitamin B12 is important for good nervous system and brain function and also the formation of red blood cells. We need this vitamin for ENERGY. It is especially important for the growth and development of children.

Juicing is by far one of the best ways to flood your system with micronutrients on a daily basis without taking a large strain on your digestive system. It is an excellent way to combat the ill-effects of nutritionally depleted soil and superboost your system.

Juicing To Avoiding Nutrient Deficiencies

 

Here are a few tips to implement into your juicing routine so as to maximize nutrient intake and absorption.

Rotate Greens

Variety is the spice of life! It is easy to get into the habit of making the same juice recipes every day. The problem with this is that you’ll be getting the same nutrients from the same produce every day and possibly missing out of some others that are equally as important.

Studies have also found that eating the same things day after day can cause an hormonal imbalances. There is also the potential for oxalic acid buildup, which can have negative effect on your thyroid.

Juice Organic Produce

 

Any pesticides, herbicides and other toxic substances that are on your produce will also be in your juice. Some of these can easily be washed off with a little hot water but others are trickier to avoid.

Studies have found residue from over 34 pesticides and chemicals on a single bunch of conventionally grown grapes. Most conventionally grown apples can contain up to 67 pesticides/herbicides/chemicals per servings. These are a synthetic cocktail of disaster for your health.

Certain foods with soft skin (apples, peaches, grapes, strawberries, etc) not only have chemicals on their skin, but absorb them as well making them impossible to wash off.

I know organic produce is expensive and it isn’t always feasible to buy EVERYTHING organic. Start with buying the following produce organic, as it has been labeled the “dirty dozen” or most contaminated produce.

  1. Celery
  2. Peaches
  3. Strawberries
  4. Apples
  5. Blueberries
  6. Nectarines
  7. Sweet bell peppers
  8. Spinach, kale and collard greens
  9. Cherries
  10. Potatoes
  11. Grapes
  12. Lettuce

  • 3 handfuls of greens (kale, chard, spinach, beet greens, spring mix, cabbage, broccoli stems, dandelion greens, celery, cucumber, zucchini, etc)
  • Superfoods (turmeric, ginger, wheatgrass, sea veggies)
  • 1-2 extra veggies (carrots, beets, bell pepper)
  • 1 small handful herbs (cilantro, parsley, mint, basil)
  • ½ -1 lemon or lime
  • ½ piece or ½ cup fruit (green apple, pineapple, peach, kiwi, pear)
Instructions
  1. You can use this recipe every day, or make a simplified version with just 3-4 of the ingredients listed. Just be sure to rotate ingredients so that you are mixing up at least 2-3 ingredients every time you juice.

The absolute best advice I can give you to help prevent numerous nutrient deficiencies is this: take control of your own nutrition. You’re already a step ahead by reading this article and doing your own research. Keep familiarizing yourself with whole foods and what nutrients they contain. Learn how to eat balanced meals and to cook food that is delicious AND full of life-sustaining vitamins and minerals.

Don’t be overwhelmed by the loads of information out there. Keep it simple. Do what makes YOU feel GOOD and FULL OF ENERGY. If you are still tired, stuck at the same weight, have poor digestion, get sick all the time or suffer from mood disorders, then whatever you’re doing right now isn’t quite working. Try something new. Stick to advice that turns you towards whole fruits and veggies, organic grass-fed meats, healthy fats, etc.
