The Ideal Morning Routine
The Ideal Morning Routine
Written by: Kavata Kithome
I have been asked time and time again how and why I am so energetic in the morning. As hard it may be to imagine, there was a time when mornings were a challenge for me. I needed the alarm set about 20 minutes before wake up time just so I could get up on time. Each morning that alarm went off, I’d roll over and hit the snooze button several times before finally getting out of bed.
Does this sound familiar? Most of us have this tendency, to take those extra 15 minutes of “snooze time” for precisely that – more sleep.
But what if I told you there was another way?
When you don’t create time for yourself, your attitude and your overall sense of well-being suffers and your inner light dims. You find that your daily schedule begins to feel like a chore and that the snooze button seems like the most attractive choice.
This is what I do every morning – create time for myself – and I have seen lasting results in my overall well-being, so much so that it is now a part of my daily self-care.
I discovered a few years ago that if I went to sleep a little earlier at night (my friends and family make fun of how early I go to sleep) and took those extra 15 minutes of snoozing and applied it to my morning routine instead, my day improved immensely.
Here’s how I dominated my snooze blues by using those 15 minutes for three key morning moments:
The First 5 Minutes: Connect With Your Body
When you first wake up in the morning, take some time to stretch; I use some of my favorite yoga moves like the cat stretch, downward dog and child pose, anything that feels good intrinsically. During this time, I also take time to feel true gratitude for being alive, for the day and what is in store.
What does this do for you? This one little moment gives your inner self an awareness of “being inside your body” by being fully present in those few stretches. You don’t have to do anything fancy; if you can, just take that moment to fully stretch up with your hands above your head and take a deep breath in. Then release with a nice long breath out as you reach down for your toes. Take another nice deep breath in and release it out as you rise and place your hands on your hips. Trust me, it feels so good!
I then continue this feeling for a few more minutes while I make my lemon water. I take the time to just connect to my breath as I drink my lemon water. No rushing. Just relaxing and being with myself in the early morning hours.
The Next 5 Minutes: Focus On Affirmations
One of my favorite lines from Funny Girl is “hello gorgeous,” I believe it is probably everyone’s favorite. I take this time to create positive moments of love and affirmations for myself. I take my arms and squeeze them tightly around myself. I squeeze gently and say, “hello gorgeous, I am excited about today! Life is beautiful. I will have a great day!”
I say this in the mirror in my bathroom to help deepen the habit and connection, or while I am drinking my lemon water and reflect on my morning time and how lovely it feels just to be quiet and centered. The kind words and extra time of reflection are mine and mine alone.
The Final 5 Minutes: Tidy Your Space
Lastly, I spend a little time tidying my bedroom. I make my bed, fluff pillows and pick out my clothes for the day. I find that these simple actions send a signal to my inner self that says, “I care about you, you deserve a tidy space.” It is a small gift when you come home later to a clean room.
I found that by doing these three acts every morning, my day seems to rise up to meet me. Things don’t feel like a chore and I am really looking forward to what the day brings. Your morning is your seed to your day, it is important to start it off right.
