The Healthiest Food You are Probably NOT Eating
Written by: Diana Schiro
In the spirit of March and the Fighting Irish, let’s get the scoop about the mightiest little fighter of all: Watercress.
It is currently watercress season in Ireland and you can thank your lucky leprechaun that this emerald green plant is growing in abundance all along the rolling rivers of the countryside!
This little gem is quite possibly the worlds healthiest food and chances are, you are probably not eating it – at least not that often!
A Brief History
Watercress grows like weeds and it was so abundant during European Medieval times, that it was considered “poor man’s bread” because they used to roll it up and eat it.
What these folks probably did not know though was that they were consuming the “richest” nutritional food compared to any other grown vegetable on the planet.
Why is watercress so good for you?
Watercress comes from the watery banks of slow moving streams.
It is an excellent source of the antioxidants, vitamins A and C, as well as vitamin K, an essential micronutrient for bone health. The level of antioxidants are so high, that they protect our DNA like a shield against free radical causing agents, thus protecting us from prostate, colon and breast cancers.
One cup of watercress has the highest dose of lutein, which is essential for eye health; it prevents the occurrence of vision-robbing macular degeneration. It has the same amount of protein per calorie as chicken breast. It’s no wonder that some are calling watercress the “worlds healthiest food.”
How Can You Incorporate Watercress into Your Daily Life?
It’s all about preventative care and adding healthy foods to your diet, right? Learning to eat properly to fuel your body will in turn leave you feeling full with the good stuff (real food nutrition), while leaving no room for the bad stuff – and will most certainly help you to live a healthier life.
Start by adding 1 cup of watercress to your diet daily.
Add it to salads or sandwiches or you can give this SUPER GREEN JUICE a try (recipe below)! Get your day started with a healthy buzz or trigger that post workout recovery and help replenish your sore muscles with clean plant proteins.
