What Are The Dirty Dozen And Clean 15 Lists And Why Is It So Important?

Okay, so in an ideal world everything would be organic and you wouldn’t have to worry about it. But the truth is that the produce you find at conventional supermarkets, ethnic stores and even some farmer’s markets is not always organic – in fact, more often than not, it is full of pesticides, other chemicals and GMOs.

You really don’t want all that junk in your body that can lead to inflammation and disease. Yuck.

But shopping organic can be expensive and in some cases – depending on where you live – may even be difficult. Hence why these lists of the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 come in handy. Foods are not created equal. On conventional farms, they use more pesticides for some foods than for others. Foods with harder shells that you can peel tend to be safer choices.

How To Use The Dirty Dozen And Clean 15 Lists

Using these lists can help you tremendously with picking the right produce. Those that are on the Dirty Dozen list, aim to buy organic at all times (or whenever possible). Those on the list of Clean 15 are safer choices to buy non-organic if you can’t afford to shop 100% organic. But remember, organic is always better, safer, healthier and often tastier too. If you buy non-organic produce, peel it when possible.

The EWG has got you covered on that. On their website you can find a longer list with the top 48 clean and dirty produce. And again, aim to shop organic at health food stores, organic farmer markets and the organic sections of your local grocery stores.
