After a long, tiring day full of work, children, decision-making and stress, sometimes, all you need is a nice and quiet half hour in your bathtub.

You shut the door, draw the water, watch the heat mist into the air, maybe light a candle or two… then sink into the soothing heated glory.

BUT WAIT – aren’t you missing something?

There’s yet another amazing gift that the Mother Earth has provided for you to make your bath time even more worth the while for your taxed, aching body.

And that gift is salt – Epsom salt, to be exact.

Epsom salt, it’s more than just those random little packets of bath salts people give you at Christmas parties or the salt you sprinkle into your soups in the kitchen. This salt is naturally designed for uses that stretch from gardening to household cleaning to beauty enhancing.

And now – as far as your bath water goes – it’s also a detoxing, anti-inflammatory exfoliant that your body longs for, especially after the hard work it helped you push through and accomplish for the day.

What Exactly Is Epsom Salt?

Epsom salt was first distilled from the water of a saline spring found at Epsom in Sulley, England. It is actually a compound of magnesium and sulfur (magnesium sulfate, MgSO4), which means the salt can technically be broken down to just magnesium, sulfur and oxygen. What makes this colorless crystal different from your common table salt, however, is its lack of sodium chloride.

Since its initial discovery, Epsom salt upholds a long history for it cleansing, beautifying, soothing qualities. Now commonly collected through carefully conducted mining operations, Epsom salt is readily available for YOU to reap its amazing benefits.

What Epsom Salt Can Do For You

Just sinking your body into a bath enhanced with this potent stuff will open the doors wide for all it has to offer you – honestly, bathing with it is just the start.

Here is a list of some of the greatest benefits you can gain from bathing in Epsom Salt:

1. Eliminate Toxins

There’s a process known as reverse osmosis that is triggered when your body comes in contact with minerals like magnesium and sulfate, both found in Epsom salt. The sulfates in particular stimulate the porous membrane aspect of your skin and will actually pull heavy metal and toxins from your body (thus the “reverse” in reverse osmosis). This cleanses you from the inside out and eases your body of a number of stresses that you may not have even been aware of.

2. Boost Magnesium Levels

Because of the high magnesium content in Epsom salt, it is a natural method for increasing the magnesium levels in your body without supplementation (though not to say you shouldn’t be supplementing yourself). Magnesium deficiencies are very common in today’s world (an estimated 80% of people are lacking this critical mineral), even though the mineral is a key factor to having good health. Magnesium deficiencies have been linked to a number of ailments such as heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and even mental illness.

Therefore, by bathing yourself in Epsom salt, not only will your muscle function, electrical impulses and energy production improve, but you will also be helping your body to ward off a number of common ailments and disease many are in danger of.

3. Reduce Pain And Inflammation

Adding Epsom salt to your bath significantly enhances the relaxation and soothing effects of the hot water and also helps ease any pain and inflammation in your body. Inflammation is one of the greatest root causes to many diseases, so anything that can help reduce it is golden. Epsom salt can go as far as to help with swelling from injury, bronchial asthma, headaches and even migraines.

4. Soothe Away Stress

Magnesium deficiency has also been known to intensify stress reactions, according to studies done by the University of North Carolina. So while increasing your magnesium levels, soaking in a hot bath of Epsom salt magnifies the stress-reducing effects you receive from the hot water alone and not only helps to relax your body, but also to ease your whirling mind.

5. Relieve Constipation

Approved by the FDA, Epsom salt is a known natural laxative that can help improve the functionality of your bowels. It’s been entitled as a laxative, because of the way it can actually increase the water in your intestines and cleanse any waste out of your colon.

Be aware though, that – just because it is a laxative – it should not become any sort of replacement for healthy high-fiber foods. You should also be sure to remain hydrated when using Epsom salt to relieve constipation.

6. Improve Blood Sugar Levels

Again, because Epsom salt is such an awesome source of magnesium, there have been studies that have shown a link between its usage and the reduced risk of developing diabetes. This is mainly because of the combined ability of magnesium and sulfate to improve the production of insulin and regulate blood sugar levels. Along with this, not only will you be helping your body prevent the effects of diabetes, but you will also be enhancing your body’s ability to produce energy.

7. Volumize Hair

Using Epsom salt in your hair can help reduce any excess oil, which is often responsible for your hair becoming flat or weighed down. You can enhance this ability by mixing Epsom salt into your conditioner (about 2 tbsp of each), massaging the mix into your scalp and leaving it for about 10-20 minutes before rinsing out. This is an awesome weekly treatment for your hair and is something that you could incorporate during that precious time you are soaking in the tub.

Where To Find Epsom Salt

You can get Epsom salt in small packages, 1-2 pound bags or more. It can easily be found online or at nearly any drugstore around the laxative section or wherever you can find rubbing alcohol, etc. Once you have some, be sure to store it at room temperature away from heat and moisture to prevent it from becoming compacted.

Epsom Salt – Sound Worth It?

Pretty intense stuff, right? Though at the same time, it can be just what you need for a gentle, relaxing treatment at the end of the day. I have a bag of my own that I crack open any time I draw up a bath for myself and the aftermath is always pleasurable and worthwhile for my entire body.

Epsom salt is a simple element and remedy and can be just what you need to gain an extra edge in your life and to show your body some well-deserved love and appreciation for all that it helps and enables you to do and accomplish in this life.

You know what I would like you to do now, or this evening, or by the end of this week after the long stretch of work days and stresses? Get yourself some Epsom salt. Then, get comfortable in that beautiful birthday suit of yours, turn down the lights, set up some candles, maybe even grab a few essential oils like lavender or wild orange and draw yourself a nice, amazingly beneficial hot bath with Epsom salt.

You more than deserve it, friend!

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
