The movie, which chronicles one man's journey to health through juicing, moved me a few years ago to purchase my first juicer. Which chronicles one man's journey to health through juicing, moved me a few years ago to purchase my first juicer. It began what is now a regular practice of making fresh green juice several times a week and purchasing fresh cold pressed juice around town regularly.</p>
<p align="justify">Joe's presentation on both using juicing as a method to "reboot" a sick body and mind and also as a supplement to an overall <a title="" href="http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-952/PlantBased-Diet-for-Beginners-How-to-Get-Started.html" target="_blank">plant-based</a>, whole foods diet was inspiring and medically very accurate. But why is it that juicing is an effective means of redirecting one's health—whether the goal is vitality, <a title="" href="http://www.mindbodygreen.com/tag/weight-loss.html">weight loss</a>, or even disease reversal?</p>
<p align="justify">Cells in the body require nutrients (i.e. vitamins and minerals) to function optimally. Many of these are referred to as<i>micronutrients</i>, to distinguish them from the macronutrient classes of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. When cells receive adequate micronutrients, you feel energized and full. On the other hand, many foods provide calories from macronutrients, but are devoid of the essential micronutrients cells crave. These are calorie-dense, nutrition-poor foods and this characterizes most processed foods.</p>
<p align="justify">Let's look at a few more reasons why vegetables, legumes, seeds, and nuts are so powerful. They provide:</p>
<p align="left"><b>1. Fiber. </b></p>
<p align="justify">This is the indigestible portion of plants. Diets high in fiber are associated with lower risks of <a title="" href="http://www.mindbodygreen.com/tag/heart-disease.html">heart disease</a>, colon cancer, diabetes, and obesity. In the <a title="" href="http://www.channing.harvard.edu/nhs/" target="_blank">Nurses Health Study</a>, one of the longest-running studies of women's health, women who ate more fiber were more likely to live longer. There is fiber in broccoli, beans and other members of the vegetable and fruit families, but none will be found in bagels, burgers and almost all other processed foods.</p>
<p align="left"><b>2. Phytonutrients. </b></p>
<p align="justify">These are a family of chemicals found only in plants that often give the color to vegetables but also confer many health benefits. Many of these plant-based chemicals are anti-inflammatory and <a title="" href="http://www.mindbodygreen.com/tag/cancer.html">anti-cancer</a>, such as the sulforphane found in broccoli. There are perhaps 10,000 of these health-promoting chemicals in the edible plant world. (You'll never find phytonutrients in a bagel.)</p>
<p align="left"><b>3. Antioxidants. </b></p>
<p align="justify">Many chemicals found in plants confer a resistance to the damage that can occur to the human body from oxygen and the process of metabolism. Just as rust can destroy metal, oxidation can lead to diseased arteries or brain cells, and contributes to diabetes and other conditions. Within plants are chemicals such as carotenoids, polyphenols, and flavonoids that are natural antioxidants.</p>
<p align="left"><b>4. Omega-3 fatty acids. </b></p>
<p align="justify">These essential fatty acids, including DHA and EPA, are taken into cell membranes and used for the internal workings and repair of cells throughout the body. While seafood can provide Omega-3 fatty acids, they're typically absent from other animal products.  Flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, hemp seeds, algae and soy are some of the plant-based foods</p>
<p><b><a href="https://vt122.infusionsoft.com/go/WhyJuicingWorks/a9/" target="_blank"><img class="wp-image-26205 alignleft" alt="photo-16 copy" src="http://fitlife.tv/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/photo-16-copy.jpg" width="360" height="360" /></a>So .... how does this get us back to Joe Cross and juicing? </b></p>
<p align="justify">The USDA recommends five or more servings of vegetables and fruits daily while Canadian authorities set the bar higher, saying 10 servings a day is optimal.</p>
<p align="justify">In order to consistently ingest this large amount of plant-based material, we need to do some planning.</p>
<p align="justify">Some ideas to get your greens: preparing large salads, adding greens in soups, and blending smoothies with berries and greens for a power breakfast or a snack. Juicing is just one more tool you can use to build a plant-based nutrition program rich in phytochemicals, and it can make it easier to reach your goal of 5 to 10 servings a day of vegetables.</p>
<p align="justify">As Joe Cross said, "If you let people in white lab coats design your food, you'll see people in white coats to treat your disease."</p>

<p>Hungary has taken a bold stand against biotech <a href="http://naturalsociety.com/blind-health-forbes-magazine-declares-monsanto-company-of-the-year/">giant Monsanto</a> and genetic modification by destroying 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, according to Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar. Unlike many European Union countries, Hungary is a nation where genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned. In a similar stance against GM ingredients, Peru has also passed a <a href="http://naturalsociety.com/peru-passes-monumental-ten-year-ban-on-genetically-modified-foods/">10 year ban</a> on GM foods.</p>
<p>Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been ground with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary, deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added.</p>
<p>Unlike several EU members, <strong>GMO seeds are banned in Hungary</strong>. The checks will continue despite the fact that seek traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said.<img class=" wp-image-26410 alignright" alt="_44080184_farmer416ap" src="http://fitlife.tv/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/44080184_farmer416ap.jpg" width="416" height="300" /></p>
<p>During the invesigation, controllers have found Pioneer Monsanto products among the seeds planted.</p>
<p>The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary, but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected in the matter and <strong>GMO seeds could have been sown on up to the thousands of hectares in the country</strong>. Most of the local farmers have complained since they just discovered they were using GMO seeds.</p>
<p>With season already under way, it is too late to sow new seeds, so this years harvest has been lost.</p>
<p>And to make things even worse for the farmers, the company that distributed the seeds in Baranya county is under liquidation. Therefore, if any compensation is paid by the international seed producers, the money will be paid primarily to that company’s creditors, rather than the farmers.</p>

<p align="justify">I love experimenting with new veggies. While they’re not particularly rare or exotic in my area, I somehow had never really made friends with radishes, until this week. Now, I might be in love. They’re a cool, crisp, and refreshingly spicy snack to just pull out of the fridge and munch on, on warm springtime afternoons. Plus, I’ve learned that they’re saucy little powerhouses of good-for-youness that’s hard to beat!</p>
<p>Here are 5 reasons why radishes rock:</p>

<p>1. <b>They fight cancer.  </b>Radishes are part of the cruciferous vegetable family, which contain a cancer-fighting antioxidant called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane studies suggest that it inhibits cancer cell growth, while being toxic to existing cancer cells, and it has shown to be beneficial in combating prostate, breast, colon, and ovarian cancers.</p>
<p>2.  <b>They’ll help you keep strong bones and teeth.</b> Radishes are packed with Vitamin-C, which is a key component in maintaining bone and teeth health.  A single cup of radishes delivers approximately 30% of your recommended daily intake.</p>

They’re great kidney cleaners. </b>A natural diuretic and detoxifier, radishes will help your body pull toxins out of your bloodstream and kidneys.  Since the kidneys act as a natural filter and can become a collection point for any toxins we consume, it’s important to help the body clean them out.</p>

<p>Here are my “Go To” recipes. Enjoy!</p>
<p><b>      Shake and GO</b></p>
<p>·      1 can of coconut water (not from concentrate)</p>
<p>·      1 scoop of Sunwarrior Vanilla Protein Powder</p>
<p>Place all ingredients in a water bottle. Shake it! And enjoy.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><b>      Protein Power Up Smoothie</b></p>
<p>·      1 cup Almond milk</p>
<p>·      2 frozen bananas</p>
<p>·      1 scoop of Sunwarrior Vanilla Protein Powder</p>
<p>·      2 dates for sweetness</p>
<p>Put all ingredients into a blender and BLEND it up!</p>
<p><b>Banana Bread</b></p>
<p>·      3 large over ripe bananas (The more spots the better)</p>
<p>·      1/2 a lemon</p>
<p>·      1/3 cup of unsweetened organic apple sauce</p>
<p>·      1/2 cup or less of maple syrup</p>
<p>·      1 cup of spelt flour</p>
<p>·      1 cup of Sunwarrior Vanilla Protein Powder</p>
<p>·      3/4 tsp of baking powder</p>
<p>·      3/4 tsp of baking soda</p>
<p>·      pinch of salt</p>
<p>·      1 cup of blueberries (if frozen defrost)</p>
<p>·      coconut oil for the pan</p>
<p>Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a loaf pan with coconut oil.</p>
<p>In a large bowl mash bananas, lemon juice, maple syrup. Make sure everything is mixed together.</p>
<p>In a different bowl combine spelt flour, Sunwarrior powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together.</p>
<p align="justify">Add the dry to the wet ingredients and Mix. Once everything is mixed together, add in the blueberries. Put the mixture in the loaf pan and make sure it is spread out evenly.</p>
<p>Bake until you can put a knife in the middle and it comes out clean, around<br />
50-60 minutes</p>
<p>Cool and Serve. Smear with a little bit of coconut oil to replace butter<br />
if you are feeling saucy!</p>
<p><b>Protein Power Balls</b></p>
<p>·      8 pitted medjool dates</p>
<p>·      1 cup walnuts (if you don’t want to use as many nuts, increase dates)</p>
<p>·      1/2 cup Sunwarriror vanilla protein powder</p>
<p>·      1 tsp. pure vanilla extract</p>
<p>Put all the ingredients into your food processor and blend until smooth.</p>
<p>Roll into balls. Place in freezer for a couple of hours. Remove and enjoy.</p>

My cholesterol is high, to the point that my doctor has restricted me from everything minus fruits and veggies, and my thyroid is low. It is truly sad that it took this to realize that my 265lbs on a 5'3'' frame would catch up to me. Any advice you can give I am will to take. <p>Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar that is made from the fermentation of apple cider. Fermentation involves a process in which sugars in food are broken down by bacteria and yeast.</p>
<p><b>Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar?</b></p>
<p>There have been many cited benefits of apple cider vinegar.</p>

<p><b>Diabetes Benefits:</b></p>
<p>A study conducted in 2007 showed that when subjects with type II diabetes consumed two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar at night their glucose levels were lowered in the morning by at least 4-6%. (1)</p>
<p>Apple cider vinegar contains an active ingredient called acetic acid. Acetic acid is relatively sour and responsible for the lip puckering response that many people have when consuming apple cider vinegar.  Acetic acid has been studied for its ability to inhibit carbohydrate digesting enzymes. This means that enzymes like amylase, sucrase, maltase and lactase are not activated so when vinegar is in the gut these sugars and starches are less likely to be absorbed, thus they don’t have an effect on glucose levels. <p><b>High Cholesterol Benefits:</b></p>
<p>Apple cider vinegar contains pectin. Pectin is a type of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber (also known as water soluble fiber) helps to lower LDL cholesterol levels by “grabbing” and essentially absorbing cholesterol and taking it out of the body. Apple cider vinegar also contains amino acids that helps to neutralize LDL cholesterol.  (3)</p>
<p><b>Weight Loss Benefits:</b></p>
<p>A 2005 study published in the <i>European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, </i> reported that when consuming apple cider vinegar they felt more full and ate less. This may be due to the pectin that is found in apple cider vinegar. The <i>Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry</i> published a study that implies that apple cider vinegar reduces fat  and also helps break fat up in the body. In this study mice were put on high fat diets and were fed acetic acid (apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid) compared to mice that were put on the same high fat diet but instead of acetic acid they were given only water. Mice who were given acetic acid had 10% less body fat than others. Researchers in this study believed that acetic acid may have the ability to turn on genes that are capable of oxidizing fatty acids. (4)</p>
<p><b>Have a stomach ache? Or hiccups? Stuffy Nose?</b></p>
<p>Apple cider vinegar has been researched for its ability to aid in combating bacterial infections in the stomach and gut. This is due to apple cider vinegar’s antibiotic properties.</p>
<p>Apple cider vinegar can also aide in relieving hiccups!</p>
<p>Apple cider also helps with sinus drainage.</p>
<p><b>Indigestion Benefits:</b></p>
<p>Adding 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to one glass of warm water can help combat indigestion.</p>
<p><b>Beat stress with apple cider vinegar</b></p>
<p>Exercise and even stress can cause buildup of lactic acid. Symptoms of lactic acid buildup include sore muscles and even fatigue. Amino acids in apple cider vinegar can help counter act lactic acid buildup. Apple cider vinegar also contains potassium and other enzymes that are responsible for relieving symptoms of fatigue and stress.</p>

<p>Apple cider vinegar is acidic so it could damage the enamel in your teeth. Always dilute apple cider vinegar before drinking it.</p>

<p>We all have those dirty little habits that keep us from being the best version of ourselves. I hate to air my dirty little secrets, but I must come clean so I can break these habits and hopefully help others who struggle with the same. I am creating in myself a better woman and making a clean break with my unhealthy lifestyle and making healthy shifts in all areas of my life. Time to clean up our acts! What are your dirty habits?</p>
<p>If I skipped breakfast, I would usually become ravenous by 2pm. If I was running between meetings all day, I would normally stop for something quick, filling, and cheap like drive through tacos or a muffin or bagel while I grabbed my afternoon coffee refill at the coffee shop. This was unhealthy for obvious reasons. I realized that eating a healthy meal mid day was crucial, even if I didn’t have time to stop for something healthy.</p>
<p><b>Healthy Shift:</b></p>

<p>I am now taking it old school and packing my lunch. I keep an apple, orange, banana, nuts, dried fruit, carrot sticks, celery and almond butter as snacks throughout the day so I am never feeling that crazed hunger. I have a hard-boiled egg for protein and make a salad in the morning and pack healthy dressing separately so my lettuce isn’t soggy.</p>
<p>It takes an extra ten minutes in the morning or night before but it is so worth it. Also, it makes a great excuse to have a picnic! <p>You can always make extra food for dinner that can be packed and reheated or eaten cold the next day. I have started making big pots of healthy chili, lentils, soup, rice, and beans and then freezing them into individual portions. Tupperware has become my best friend lately.  It allows me to bring my food with me anywhere, keep it super fresh, and reduces waste.</p>
