Surviving The Holiday Season After Loss
By Pamela Schwarz
The holiday season can be a difficult time for many people. If you have lost a family member or a friend, it can be especially hard to enjoy the season.
Remember when you were a child and you couldn’t wait for December? Making cookies to leave for Santa, watching the Christmas specials on television, opening presents and getting time off from school is what made this a special month.
As adults, we tend to lose the magic of the holiday season. It is replaced with the stress of shopping, decorating and cooking. But what if you took a moment to see the holidays through the eyes of a child again?
You CAN enjoy the magic of the holidays again and here are a few ways to help you have a beginner’s mind this season.
- Be Gentle With Your Heart
Allow your heart to be filled with love and joy. Even if you are missing a loved one, think of the happy times you shared together. Allow your heart to be open to the joys of the present holiday.
High expectations are a result of pressure from retailers and other societal influences. Stop worrying about the perfect gift or how clean your house is and just enjoy yourself and the company of others. Holidays are special times to create memories that can be cherished for years to come.
Try something new this holiday season. Make your own cards or gifts to add a personal touch. These things don’t need to be fancy or expensive, they just need to come from the heart. Take the time to get together with friends and enjoy a laugh.
- Talk About And Remember Loved Ones
Share happy stories and memories about loved ones that are no longer with you. It’s okay to be a little sad, but remember that this is a happy time. Celebrate life!
Whatever your beliefs may be during this season, embrace your spirituality. Take time to meditate or pray. Be grateful for the things you do have and the beautiful people you are surrounded by.
The most important thing you can do this season is enjoy the moment. Let go of the things that cause you stress or unhappiness. Surround yourself with love and positivity to create the magic you remember experiencing as a child.
How will you see the holidays with a beginner’s mind this year? Give it a try and enjoy the magic this beautiful season has to give.
Wishing you a happy, healthy holiday season filled with peace and love!
