Sugar – More Addictive Than Cocaine?

Over the past fifty years, things have been designed for convenience. As society has become more complex, people find less time to cook for themselves and to sit down for a home cooked meal.

Instead, there are options such as fast food and frozen dinners available to all who live busy lifestyles. In most cases, people that are not busy at all also opt for processed foods, because they are readily available.

It is well known that most foods that are processed have ingredients that are not very healthy. Sugar happens to be one of those ingredients and is a highly addictive one.

It’s obvious that sugar is in sweets and desserts. However, it is not well known that high amounts of sugar is used in a variety of savory processed foods as well.

For Example:

  • Pasta Sauce
  • Frozen Pizza
  • Frozen Dinners
  • Bread


There are thousands of processed foods that contain hidden sugars. Fast food restaurants have been putting sugar in their food for decades. This is just one of the reasons why fast food is so addictive.

In one scientific study, a group of rats were given sugar and another group was given cocaine. The results from this study were surprising.

The test group given sugar had similar patterns of behavior as the test group given cocaine. This behavior displayed severe addiction. Later in the study, the group that was given cocaine was switched to sugar and their behavior immediately became addictive. Surprisingly, when they had a choice of sugar or cocaine, they would repeatedly choose the sugar.

Sugar can be attributed to being one of the main causes of obesity in America. Obesity, as defined by the Mayo Clinic, is the excessive amount of body fat that can increase the risk of health problems. Processed flour and sugar in fast food, junk food and prepackaged foods cause a spike in blood sugar. Insulin levels then increase and eventually people become insulin resistant, which is a resistance to the hormone insulin, causing an increase in blood sugar.

Insulin resistance is also a reason why people have an increase in cortisol levels. This in turn causes dangerous belly fat. Visceral fat (abdominal fat, belly fat) exists deep within our abdominal cavity between our vital organs.

Visceral fat is linked to:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Breast Cancer


An important thing to know is that visceral fat has the ability to change the normal balance of hormones in the human body. Resistin happens to be one of these hormones.

In scientific studies with resistin, there were controversial findings. Some studies found that it could be related to obesity and Type 2 diabetes, while others did not. However, these findings are not conclusive and more research is needed.

Additionally, reducing and eliminating sugar can have positive results in preventing and even stopping the progression of many diseases. Sugar addiction can be a very difficult habit to break. Introducing whole foods such as fruit and vegetables can curb cravings. Drinking lots of water is also important, as is getting plenty of exercise. These things done consistently help detox the body and the need for sugar diminishes in time.
