Cancer scares me. But chemo scares me just as much.

There, I said it.

Cancer cases are rampant. 1 in every 3 people is or will be affected by cancer during their lifetime. Chances are that you know someone – likely several people – who have been affected by cancer (I certainly do). Perhaps you have healed from, or are currently healing from cancer yourself.

Conventional treatment of cancer usually involves chemotherapy. Chemotherapy attacks not only cancer cells, but the healthy cells in your body as well.

Chemotherapy has many unpleasant side effects:

  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Cold and mouth sores
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Blood disorders
  • Nervous system effects (tingling, shaking, loss of balance, etc.)
  • Changes in thinking and memory
  • Sexual issues
  • Reproductive issues
  • Hair loss
  • Appetite loss

Besides these negative side effects, more and more people question the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Dr. Peter Glidden even went as far as arguing that 97% of chemotherapy is not effective.

With cancer rates rising, the negative side effects and possible ineffectiveness of chemo, it’s natural for you to start looking at alternative options to use instead of or along-side conventional cancer treatment.

One food that has proven itself to be quite powerful is ginger.

Ginger is a fantastic spice in your kitchen that you may use for cooking, juicing and baking, but is also an effective treatment for nausea and motion sickness. What’s even more amazing is the incredible healing effects ginger has on different types of cancer, according to some new studies.

A study using mice done by Georgia State University found that ginger extract was able to reduce the size of a prostate tumor by 56%. Ginger reduced inflammation and supplied the mice with antioxidants.

Another study examined 6-shogaol, a component found in ginger and found that it is superior in targeting the root cause of breast cancer malignancy or breast cancer stem cells.

You may be surprised, but cancer stem cells only make up 0.2 to 1% of the cellular makeup of a tumor. Yet these cancer cells are very difficult to kill. If these cancer stem cells are not destroyed, they will create even more cancer cells that could travel all over your body. This is how cancer spreads.

“What that means is these cancer stem cells are able to self-renew; they are capable of continuous differentiation, are resistant to conventional chemotherapeutic agents and are capable of splitting off and forming new tumor colonies. The only way to fully ensure that your body is cancer free is to destroy the cancer stem cells within a tumor.”, explained the study.

According to the study, 6-shogaol is found in ginger when the root is either dried or cooked. These are common methods for preparing ginger. It has an amazing effect on the body while fighting cancer stem cells.

What’s amazing is that the cancer-destroying effects occurred at concentrations that were non-toxic to non-cancer cells. Remember, chemotherapy attacks healthy cells too. But this particular component of ginger only killed cancer cells, but left all healthy cells alone.

Conventional cancer treatments like chemo can harm the patient, but ginger seems to have a selective cytotoxicity and can therefore, be truly healing without harm.

According to this particular research in breast cancer, 6-shogaol drastically affects the cell cycle that increased cancer cell death. Furthermore, it inhibits the growth of breast cancer spheroids or lumps.

Comparing it to cancer drug Taxol, 6-shogaol killed more cancer cells and tumors. Researchers even increased the dosage of taxol, but found that, even when taxol dosage was increased, 6-shogaol was still 10,000 times more effective than Taxol in terms of killing cancer cells, stopping new tumors from developing and keeping healthy cells alive.

These results are beyond amazing.

But – should you drop all conventional or alternative treatments for cancer and focus on ginger only?

Probably not just yet. This study was not performed on human participants, only on cell cultures. Still, these results call for further research. They are very promising for many future cancer patients – especially when knowing how difficult traditional treatments are on the mind, body and soul.

Whatever treatment you may choose – conventional, alternative, holistic or the combination of them – you can still add ginger to your diet. Ginger has so many healing properties – it is anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial and immune boosting among many other things. Overall, ginger offers nothing but benefit to your body and your health.
