Researchers found that fasting-like diets can reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.
Researchers at USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology placed 71 adults on three cycles of low-calorie diets that mimicked fasting. In their results they found that participants had reduced their signs of cardiovascular disease, including signs of inflammation, blood pressure and fasting glucose levels. Participants had also experienced weight loss from body fat, but not from muscle.
Moreover, the study showed that participants had also reduced their risk of diabetes, cancer and other age-related disease.
Prior studies agree that fasting every 3 months can lower your risks of serious diseases.
Prior studies done on mice have already demonstrated the benefits of fasting, but this study has proved that such practice is safe and beneficial for humans as well. According to Valter Longo, director of the USC Longevity Institute, this study shows remarkable evidence that a period of a fasting-mimicking diet can create a real change in your life and can slow down the aging process.
Other larger FDA studies have shown the same in the past. A trial done between 2013 and 2015 on 100 participants between ages 20 and 70 has shown promising results as well. In this study, participants were put into randomized groups. The control group had continued their normal eating habits while the second group followed a fasting-like diet for 3-months.
“Larger FDA studies are necessary to confirm its effects on disease prevention and treatment,” he added. The second group was required to follow a 5 days of fasting protocol, consuming only 750 to 1,100 calories of healthy foods and supplements. Three months later the control group was placed on the same special diet.
Participants of the fasting diet lost 6 pounds on average. Their blood pressure levels improved, also reducing their risk of cancer. The control group, once moved to the fasting diet, experienced the same results.
It is remarkable that participants retained the benefits once returning to their regular eating habits.
According to Dr. Longo, fasting particularly seems beneficial for those with risk factors of serious diseases, such as heart-disease, cancer and diabetes.
