Stressed? Try These Teas To Help Calm You
Written by: Kavata Kithome
As I have gotten older, I have found that I experience an immense amount of stress. It seems to compound when I add things to my plate, from deadlines at work, to launching a new business and with all that, keeping my relationships intact. I found myself being overwhelmed and stressed and this was especially true when I did not take time for self- care.
As you know by now, I am an avid tea drinker. I must have my tea; sometimes I have up to 5 cups of tea, beginning my day with a wonderfully delightful black tea and finish the day with a beautiful floral chamomile.
Drinking tea is a large part of my self-care and I highly recommend it to everyone. Whether you have anxiety regularly or you are just dealing with the stress of everyday life, the simple action of sipping a warm cup of tea can be oh so comforting.
So, if you are like most people who are stressed, overwhelmed or experiencing anxiety, this tea post may be just what the doctor ordered!
Here are 3 teas that I feel are a complete must in your kitchen cabinets. I have used each of these and found them to be super relaxing and dare I say it, soothing. They are a warm loving hug from your mom! Need I say more?
1. Traditional Medicinals Cup of Calm – ($5 for 16 tea bags)
I drink this tea when I feel super anxious. It is like Xanax in a cup. I found it to be super soothing, but it is also very strong, so I use discretion for those times when I feel like the walls are caving in. The secret in this one is passionflower, which in studies has shown to be as effective as prescription anxiety pills. So my anxiety sufferers, this may be the tea for you!
2. Republic of Tea Get Relaxed – ($11 for 36 tea bags)
For me there is nothing like a strong cup of earl grey or English breakfast tea. However, when I feel stressed or anxious, floral teas do the trick. This tea smells and tastes of lavender and rose and offers potent aromatherapeutic benefits. It has rooibos, passionflower and chamomile, which add a lovely sweetness. Get Relaxed is perfect for sipping throughout the workday to feel mellow and chill, no matter how stressful and overwhelming the day may be.
3. Yogi Calming Tea – ($7 for 16 tea bags)
This is the tea I recommend to my sister when she is freaking out about her 12-page papers that always seem to be due at midnight (but in her defense, who would not freak out about 12-page papers?). It is probably my favorite of the three; this is because it feels like you’re being wrapped up in a wonderful hug and provides a full-body state of zen. It is a chamomile-based blend and has a few remarkable additions such as gotu kola and licorice. The tea is delightfully sweet with soft notes of herbal and a floral undertone.
Here is one thing to remember: it is best to cover your tea while it steeps. This ensures that you get the most benefits out of these teas. This prevents the volatile organic oils that give herbs their potency from evaporating in the steam, ensuring the resulting tea is extremely effective.
I am blessed to have always drunk tea; it is truly one of life’s simple pleasure. This is why I share my experiences with anyone who will listen and I am especially glad to share these three with you.
