I’m all about science.

And I’m all about experimenting.

BUT, one place I don’t want to see strange things growing and forming is on my food!

Have you ever discovered a vegetable at the bottom of the produce drawer from a few weeks ago, which is now covered in mold and is oozing icky brown juices? Ditto, I’ve had it happen too – GROSS.

You and I have both been guilty of it from time to time. Each time you throw away spoiled food, it is costing you MONEY! However, there are methods and tricks to use to help minimize waste.

Prolong the life of your groceries, reduce spoilage and extend your food budget by following these clever tips!

17 Simple Food Storage Tips

Berries
  • To clean berries of small micro-organisms:
    • Immediately put them in a bowl with water and vinegar (10 parts water to 1 part vinegar)
    • Allow the berries to soak for 5 minutes
    • Strain and dry them
  • This process makes them last longer!
Herbs
  • To make them last “forever”: put herbs in olive oil and then freeze them
Broccoli, Celery
  • To lengthen shelf life and maintain crispness and crunchiness:
    • Wrap them in aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator
Vegetables
  • Blanch them and then freeze them:
    • Briefly boil and then plunge them into an ice bath
  • Preserves their quality
  • Exception: do NOT blanch onions or peppers
Lettuce
  • Wrap it in a paper towel to help absorb excess moisture, which will help it last longer
  • You can also use the aluminum foil technique
Pineapple
  • Remove the crown and place it on its head to last longer
Bananas
  • To slow down the ripening process:
    • Wrap the bananas in cling wrap (plastic wrap)
Cake
  • Protect it with white bread, which will absorb the excess moisture in the air
    • Helps prevent the cake from drying out
Tomato Sauce
  • Place sauce in freezer bags and freeze it
  • Break off sections of sauce and use as needed
Onions
  • Use pantyhose and tie knots between each onion
    • The onions will last longer when not touching each other!
Eggs
Honey
  • Store in a cold place
  • Make sure the lid is tightly sealed
Potatoes
  • Store them separately
  • When stored together they spoil quicker
  • Keep in a dark place to prevent:
    • Attracting germs
    • Producing solanin, which is toxic
Carrots
  • Store in damp sand in a wood box, placed in a cool and dry place
Apples
  • For up to a 6 month shelf-life, store apples in the refrigerator
  • ALWAYS toss rotten apples immediately, otherwise they will spoil the other apples
Ground Beef
  • Place individually wrapped portions in separate containers or plastic bags
Cheese
  • Wrap in special, grease- proof paper to preserve its flavor and make it last longer
    • Allows the cheese to breathe
    • Regulates humidity level

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
