STOP Sticking Q-Tips Into Your Ears – You Could Be Causing Damage

There is nothing better than a loooong hot shower… then cleaning your ears with a Q-tip. I can’t explain why, maybe because it seems so cleansing, but also feels so good.
If you know what I am talking about, I have some devastating news. Even though cleaning your ears with a Q-tip seems like one of the basics of good hygiene, it turns out that you should NOT be doing that.
Using a Q-tip can actually increase your risk of injury and infection in your ear. It may even result in permanent damage. Bummer.
Before you become worried about all that ear wax in your ear, let me assure you that ear wax is not only natural, but it is also good for your body. Ear wax keeps your ears naturally clean and moisturised and prevents dirt, dust, or anything else harmful from entering your ears.
When you are using a Q-tip you may think that you are removing ear wax. But what ends up happening is that your ear wax gets pushed back deeper inside your ear into an area where it can’t naturally clean itself.
This can result in bacteria, viruses and fungus entering from your outer ear and lead to infections.
Moreover, the pressure from the Q-tip can cause damage in your ear canal, including bleeding and even permanent hearing loss.
Even Q-tips states that you should only clean your outer ear gently without entering your ear canals. You should probably listen to this warning.
Some people have more excess wax though than others. If you are one of them or you feel that your ears need some extra cleaning for any other reason, simply use a cloth to wash any buildup on the outside of your ear without sticking any Q-tips or other objects into your ear canal.
Some ear-nose-throat specialists believe that the best way to clean your ears is with a few drops of plain water or hydrogen peroxide left sitting in your ears for a few minutes then cleaned with a cotton ball. This process should help loosen any extra wax.
In most cases though, a good shower should take care of any issues.
If you feel that your ear is overproducing wax, visit your doctor to check into the issue. But stay away from Q-tips (at least don’t stick them into your ears), okay?
