Stop Overeating With This One little Secret

Have you ever noticed that, when you are eating something that isn’t good for you, you tend to eat too much of it?
No one seems to struggle with overeating when it comes to fruits and vegetables, right? Well, they may have just found what is going on inside your body that is causing the problem.
When you are eating, you often rely on little sensors to go off in your body that tell your mind that you have eaten enough and that it is time to stop.
But what would happen if those signals didn’t fire right? What if your brain didn’t get the memo that the stomach was full and it was time to stop?
Perhaps you have been to a buffet where you walked in and then waddled out. You weren’t exactly sure what happened, but you were then overstuffed and exhausted. Well, researchers have found a link between eating fatty foods and overeating.
Overeating Because Of Fatty Foods
In one study, mice that had eaten foods high in fat were found to have defective signaling in their brain. Somehow, by eating fatty foods, the mice would start overeating and that would lead to obesity.
In an article published in the journal Hiliyon, the body controls how much it eats by balancing the survival needs for food and the desire to eat for pleasure. Your mind will shift between the two, depending on why you are eating.
When your brain has defective signaling, the pleasure sensors take over and that results in obesity from overeating. Eating fatty foods can cause the brain to lose control and then you find yourself too full at the end of every meal.
Neuroscience Behind Why We Overeat
Researchers from the Neuroscience Program in Substance Abuse (N-PISA) from Vanderbilt University believe that if you understand why you tend to overeat, then you can take steps to avoid it. These steps would reduce your chances of obesity and help prevent a lot of risk factors to your health.
“We have always been struck by how much animals – and even people – will over-consume tasty high-fat foods, even though they might be technically feeling full,” said author Dr. Aurelio Galli, from the study. “A high-fat diet causes people to eat more, which ultimately impairs the ability of obese people to successfully control their caloric intake, lose weight and maintain weight loss. We have conducted several studies trying to understand why a high fat diet has this effect.”
Since 1980, obesity has more than doubled worldwide. In this world today, there are around 2 billion people who are overweight with around 600 million of these people being obese. Science believes that there are many different contributing factors to this epidemic, such as changes in food trends, environment and economic stresses.
On a biological level, obesity results from the brain not being able to match intake with the body’s energy needs. This causes your body to store the excess as fat.
Two Types Of Eating
1. Hedonic eating is a type of eating that is controlled by survival and reward as well as the metabolism. This is when you eat to give your body the fuel it needs to function and stay healthy.
2. Pleasure eating is another type of eating that is connected to the senses such as texture, taste and smell. When your brain sensors aren’t working right, then this second type of eating takes over, making it much harder to control how much you consume.
Basically, the highly addictive fatty foods cause a dependency by blocking out the brain signals that would otherwise help you stop eating them or at least stop you when you are full.
“We distilled the neurobiological mechanisms involved specifically in overeating for fat,” said Dr. Kevin Niswender, another one of the authors of the study. “We defined the why, where and how of ‘hedonic’ obesity and found that disrupting a specific signaling pathway in the brain can lead to overeating, specifically food high in fat.”
What Can You Do To Stop Overeating?
The trick is to not even start eating fatty foods. If you decide to eat something with high fat, even if you promise yourself that you will only eat one, it will be extremely difficult to avoid overeating.
Keep deep fried foods, fast food, foods high in sugar, sweets and other fatty and greasy foods out of your home. The biggest thing that helped my family was not even buying them.
Also, try to stay away from sugars and simple carbs, because they may also send you down the spiral of disrupting your brain signals. I have had so many days in my past where I planned to eat healthy, but then something as simple as a piece of white bread or a white flour tortilla sent me on a snacking spiral.
Instead, eat a low fat, low sugar, complex carb diet with safer alternatives such as whole grains and brown rice. This will help you stay in control of your eating. I promise you will feel better and think more clearly when you avoid even a nibble of high fat or sugary foods.
