STOP Eating High Fructose Corn Syrup

High Fructose Corn Syrup is an ingredient that has been added to food to replace sugar and natural sweeteners. This ingredient has worked its way into nearly everything from bread to soda.
Currently, there is a media debate going on about the benefits or “lack of harm” gained from High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) but, if you look at all the evidence, you will want to keep it as far away from yourself and your family as possibly.
The average American has increased their consumption of high fructose corn syrup to around 60 pounds per year. This is an INSANE amount of a highly processed sugar that has been linked to diabetes and other health issues.
Since HFCS has been massively added to the market, towards the tail end of the 90s, obesity rates have more than tripled. Now, people are 7 times more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes as well. These are alarming statistics that cannot be ignored.
The current method of defense from those companies who manufacture these products is to create doubt and confusion. This blurs what you think you know and makes it really hard to get a straight answer about the health concern of this product.
This is nothing new; the tactics used by the tobacco industry to convince people that smoking was good for you and considered cool is still working to this day.
What you need to do as a consumer is to fact check what you hear on the news and make sure you know what you are putting into your body.
Here are the 5 main reasons that you should STOP eating High Fructose Corn Syrup TODAY!
1. Sugar, in ANY form, can cause obesity, diabetes and other diseases.
Sugar causes acidity in the body, which can wear down the immune system and make it harder for your body to fight off illness or major conditions. The amount of sugar, sweetener and HFCS consumed by Americans is alarmingly high.
One 20 ounce drink that has been sweetened by HFCS such as a soda, sport drink, or tea typically has around 17 teaspoons of sugar. When you think about the fact that the average teen drinks 2 of these per day, the numbers start to add up quick.
Our hunter and gatherer ancestors consumed an equivalent of 20 teaspoons of sugar per year. If you are only counting the sugar in drinks, then we are consuming almost double what they had in 2 years – every single day
Though sugar is sugar, quality does matter and that is why you need to know why HFCS is more harmful and unregulated than sugar.
2. HFCS is not biochemically identical nor is it processed the same way in your body as cane sugar.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is an industrialized food product that is far from being natural. It is extracted from corn stalks and is processed in a secret way that the manufacturers will not release.
Where normal sugar is the bonding of sucrose and glucose and takes the body longer to break down, HFCS is unbonded and is absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream, causing a whole mess of problems.
Fructose goes right for your liver and gets it to begin producing fats such as triglycerides and cholesterol. This is why so many people have liver damage and around 70 million people suffer from a condition known as “fatty liver.”
Glucose is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, causing big spikes of insulin, which can lead to diabetes and start affecting your fat storage hormone.
3. HFCS has contaminants that are not regulated or measured by the FDA such as mercury.
When an FDA researcher tested a vat of HFCS, she found toxic levels of mercury inside. There were also other chemicals that are not from glucose or sucrose, leaving you to wonder just what is in the foods you eat.
4. Despite the efforts of the corn industry, nutritional and medical experts do not support the use of HFCS in our diets.
Barry M. Popkin, Ph.D., Professor at the Department of Nutrition and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has published many different articles on the dangers of sweetened drinks and how they have contributed to the country’s obesity epidemic.
“The digestion, absorption and metabolism of fructose differ from those of glucose. Hepatic metabolism of fructose favors de novo lipogenesis (production of fat in the liver). In addition, unlike glucose, fructose does not stimulate insulin secretion or enhance leptin production.
Because insulin and leptin act as key afferent signals in the regulation of food intake and body weight (to control appetite), this suggests that dietary fructose may contribute to increased energy intake and weight gain. Furthermore, calorically sweetened beverages may enhance caloric overconsumption.”– Barry M. Popkin, Ph.D.
So, not only are you consuming something harmful, but it is increasing your desire to overeat in general.
5. Seeing HFCS as an ingredient in a product is often a sign that the other ingredients are nutrient-poor, poor-quality and disease-creating.
The government farm bill subsidies make HFCS cheaper than sugar. When a company is using this lower quality ingredient, it really makes you question the other ingredients.
HFCS has allowed companies to take an 8-ounce drink and make it a 20-ounce drink with almost no additional cost to the manufacturer’s. That may be why it is so common to see 32 and 42-ounce drinks on the market now.
This data is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the issues and scares that High Fructose Corn Syrup has caused in this world. My family and I check the ingredient lists of everything we buy to make sure HFCS is nowhere to be found.
