Being “backed up” is such a crappy feeling.

Yes – pun INTENDED.

There isn’t any other way to describe it other than misery. The uncomfortable, “stuck,” bloated and nauseating feeling that results from not being able to go number 2 has no place for you in your daily life.

However, constipation happens.

Crap.

So, what are you to do when things stop moving along smoothly?

Before I dive into HOW to relieve constipation, know that you are not alone. Okay, so it may be a little taboo or “gross” to talk about with friends, but being the wide open book that I am, when I  share with friends that I have this issue from time to time, they usually share that they do TOO (especially women).

Our bodies were designed to consume and eliminate (eat and poop – think of a newborn baby. They eat and poop, eat and poop. THAT is how you were made to work). However, what you choose to eat as well as environmental influences can interfere with the proper functioning of your digestive system.

Should you find yourself having a bout of constipation, use these all-natural, at-home remedies to help you let it go:

STOP Constipation With These Natural Home Remedies

Make The Time
  • Create a routine that allows you time to use the bathroom
    • Helps your body regulate itself according to your routine
    • Even if you do not have the urge “to go,” use your bathroom time to squat, which encourages things to move along
  • Proper bathroom habits, when implemented regularly, train your body to become more regular
Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Contains pectin
    • A water-soluble fiber
    • Supports increased digestive function
  • Acts as a natural laxative
    • Works with your body’s normal processes
    • Encourages a bowel movement
Raw Honey
  • Unprocessed, raw honey contains enzymes and minerals needed for a healthy digestive system
  • Take 1 tablespoon 3 times per day to ease constipation
    • Take alone or mix with warm water
  • Regular consumption of honey helps maintain the flow of your digestion
  • BONUS: Honey also enhances energy and is great to take before working out
    • It can also help ease seasonal allergies!
STAY Hydrated
  • To prevent and relieve constipation, maintaining proper hydration is ESSENTIAL
  • Your system needs sufficient fluids
    • Softens your stools
    • Helps your bowels move regularly
    • Allows your digestive system to function properly
  • To stay hydrated, drink:
    • Water throughout the way
    • Fresh fruit and vegetable juices
    • Herbal teas
    • Clear broths  
Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Contains citric acid, which helps flush toxins out of your digestive tract
  • Assists in fueling your digestive system
  • A natural, gentle laxative
  • Juice 1 lemon and add to warm water
    • For best results, drink in the morning on an empty stomach
    • Don’t forget to add honey too!
Healthy Fats
  • Stimulate your digestive system
  • Keep your intestines lubricated
  • Regularly consume:
    • Coconut oil
    • Olive oil
    • Flax seed oil
    • Avocados
Exercise
  • When you move your body, you are moving your digestive system as well
    • Helps your intestines move things along
  • Stimulates your bowels
  • Relieves stress, which can cause constipation
  • Do 20 to 30 minutes of exercise daily, such as walking, jogging, swimming, or yoga
Eat A Healthy Diet
  • Eat a diet full of vegetables and fruits, especially those high in vitamin C
  • Foods that ease constipation:
    • Vegetables
    • Dark, leafy greens
    • Fruit
    • Beans
    • Seeds and nuts (especially chia and flax seeds)
    • Whole, unprocessed grains
    • Fermented foods
    • Probiotic yogurts
  • Stay away from foods that can cause constipation:
    • Dairy: milk, cheese, ice cream
    • Processed junk foods: frozen dinners, cookies, chips
    • Bread products: sliced bread, bagels
    • Sugary drinks: stick to water, black coffee and herbal teas

Well, there ya have it! You should be well on your way to the bathroom at this point.
