Ever since I was a kid, I have heard about the healing properties of the incredible St. John’s Wort herb. The name always had me feeling a little confused and a tiny bit grossed out – until I heard what it could do for your body and mind.
The Magical History
St. John’s Wort is a beautiful little plant with pleasant yellow flowers and despite the name, carries a legacy of healing in its wake. From ancient Greece down through the middle ages and on to modern day, this plant has been considered almost magical because of its power to keep away illness and “evil” alike.
The famous greek herbalist, Dioscorides, talked about using this herb to help with nerve problems such as sciatica. While another herbalist by the name Theophrastus, highly recommended the herbs for wounds and cuts.
Medicinal Use
Do you struggle with seasonal depression, anxiety, stress, mild levels of depression, or even nerve damage? Well, ever since 60 minutes did a segment on how St. John’s Wort can help with these issues over 10 years ago, the herbs uses has gone off the charts.
In order to gain the most benefit from this herb, which you can get from most health food stores, you really need to take it for 2-3 weeks. It is an herb, after all, and needs some time to do its work.
Safety Info
Taking this herb can cause some people to be more sensitive to the sunlight. Stop using it if you notice a rash or become itchy.
Note: If you are on any antidepressants, be sure to ask your doctor before using St. John’s Wort because it can effect how many antidepressants will work within your body. |
St. John’s Wort “Lighten-Up Tea”
- Take 4-6 tbsp of dried herb (6-8 tbsp of fresh herb) into a glass jar
- Pour boiling water over the herbs, filling jar and steep for 30-45 minutes. (The length of steeping time and the amount of herb you use will affect the strength of your tea.)
- Strain and enjoy!
The easiest way to get these ingredients is to visit your local nursery and grow them yourself. However, you can also order them online or visit a local herbalist shop.
