Should You Actually Do A Cleanse? (+ 12 Proven Tips)

cleanse, detox, lifestyle

The holidays are way over and spring is around the corner. Okay, maybe not quite, but you may already be thinking about getting ready for a spring cleanse. But should you even do a cleanse?

A detox cleanse can be a fantastic way to start a healthier lifestyle with a clean slate, to redirect your taste buds, to improve your overall health and to kickstart your weight loss journey. However, you can’t look at a cleanse as a quick fix.

A 3-day, 7-day or 14-day juice cleanse won’t heal all your ailments and won’t offer a long-term solution unless you commit to a lifestyle change. You can’t go back to eating Snickers bars and fast food. You have to get on the clean, healthy eating bandwagon.

When you think about detoxification and recovery, a healthy whole foods diet is the key. Whether you continue eating a healthy diet after a cleanse, or decide to eat healthy without an drastic cleanse, your body can start naturally recovering. A healthy nutritious diet can allow your detoxification organs (liver, lungs, kidneys and skin) to work optimally and detoxify your body every day as needed. In the end, a healthy diet can be cleansing and remedying just on its own.

Here are some essential techniques you can implement to support your everyday cleansing:

1. Eat plenty of alkaline, anti-inflammatory and nutrient dense foods. Dark leafy greens, such as collards, kale, beet greens and swiss chards are your friends. Parsley, cilantro, turmeric and other herbs and spices are incredibly beneficial too. Beets, radishes, onions, garlic, broccoli are all foods that aid detoxification every day.

2. Consume foods that are rich in healthy fats, such as nuts and seeds, healthy oils (coconut oil, flax oil) and avocados.

3. Eat foods that are high in healthy plant-based protein, including beans, lentils, quinoa, millet, oats, rice, teff, buckwheat, amaranth, nuts and seeds.

4. Drink herbal teas, such as green tea and rooibos.

5. Drink plenty of green juices, at least one a day. Your main focus should be greens and vegetables, such as kale, spinach, parsley, cucumber, beets and lettuce. Add only ½ – 1 piece of fruit to taste, preferably with a lower GI such as apples or pears. Add some lemon or lime and ¼ inch of ginger too.

6. Try castor oil packs to aid liver detox, healthy circulation, lymph flow and pain relief. Rub some castor oil across your belly where your liver is. Cover it with an old towel and add a heating pad on top for about 30-60 minutes. Do this 3-7 days a week.

7. Drink plenty of water, about ½ of your body weight in ounces to aid your kidney function and detox.

8. Make sure to eat plenty of fiber. You can achieve this with a plant-based diet with plenty of greens, veggies, fruits, grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. An extra 1-2 tbsp of chia or flax seed can do magic for your elimination, which is detoxification of waste through your bowels.

9. Try hydrotherapy to improve your circulation. Alternate between cold and hot showers finishing, with the cold one.

10. Go to saunas to promote sweating and elimination through your skin. Ideally, do this 3-7 days a week for about 15-20 minutes each time. The best is to finish this by jumping into a cold pool.

11. Exercise. Exercise pumps your heart and allows detoxification through sweating.

12. Meditate and do an emotional cleanse. Meditation can help you decrease stress and increase relaxation. Don’t undermine the power of an emotional or mental detox. Taking breaks from technology, journaling, practicing gratitude, practicing forgiveness and working through emotional junk are all helpful

All these tips should help your cleansing goals and healing ventures. Practicing these steps regularly can bring remarkable changes into your life overtime.

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
