Shocking Signs You May Have Adrenal Fatigue

Written by: Kat Gal

Adrenal fatigue is rampant and it affects about 80% of people in the world. Could you be one of them?

The adrenal glands sit on the top of your kidneys and are responsible for regulating the stress response through the synthesis of cortisol and adrenaline. Basically, when your adrenals are working well, they ensure that you are energetic – if otherwise healthy. But when they are fatigued, they make you tired and create all sorts of problems.

Your body’s ability to recuperate from physical, mental and emotional stress is affected by chronic stress, a fast-paced lifestyle and an unbalanced diet. It may not surprise you that in our modern world with a go-go-go lifestyle, most people will struggle with adrenal fatigue at some point in their life. Could you too have adrenal fatigue?

There are many symptoms associated with adrenal fatigue, some of which include:

1. Excessive sweating or perspiration without good reason

3. Racing thoughts

4. Low blood sugar

5. Trouble concentrating

6. Body aches

7. Cravings for salt

9. Feeling unbalanced

10. Dark circles under eyes

11. Weight gain

12. Knee and/or back pain or weakness

13. Lack of libido

If you think you may have adrenal fatigue, while it is important to seek professional help, it is also important to address the issue right away. You adrenal health is crucial for your thyroid function, immune system function and overall health.

There are many ways you can support your adrenals and get them back in balance in a natural way…

1. Get enough sleep – When your adrenals are fatigued, they are begging for some R&R. Getting proper sleep is important to give your adrenals and your entire system some well-deserved rest.

It depends on the person, but generally, be sure to get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep at night. Try to stay in rhythm with nature as much as possible – go to sleep soon after it gets dark, preferably by 10pm and wake up with the sun. Keep a regular sleep schedule and stick to it. If possible, wake without an alarm and allow your natural circadian rhythm to wake you when it’s ready.

2. Eat a whole foods diet – Eliminate artificial and processed foods – or in other words, “junk.” Food-like items put stress on your adrenals and fill your system with toxins. It is the best to stick with the produce aisle and buy organic, but if you must buy packed foods, read the labels and make sure you understand what all of them are. Stick with foods with less than 5 ingredients on the label.

Keep a highly alkaline and fiber rich diet to keep your system working efficiently. For your adrenals, it is the best to focus on a plant-based eating regimen, sticking with organic greens, vegetable, fruits, nuts, legumes, beans and grains. If you eat animal protein, keep it organic and to a minimum, loading your plate with plenty of veggies.

3. Drink up – Make sure you drink plenty of fresh, clean, filtered water every day – aiming for ½ your bodyweight in ounces each day (ex: 150 lb. person = 75 ounces of water daily). Quit your coffee habits and stay away from other caffeinated beverages as they will just keep you going instead of giving you rest.

Staying away from sodas and other sugary beverages are a given, as they are processed and artificial. Eliminating alcohol will your liver much needed rest as well. However, green juices and smoothies should absolutely be included in your plan as they provide essential nutrients in an easily accessible form. Just be sure you’re sticking to low glycemic recipes to keep your blood sugar balanced.

4. Practice self-care and self-love Hydration, whole foods and sleep are non-negotiable parts of self-care, but there is so much more to it. Excessive exercise is not recommended, but movement is still important. Opt for gentle exercise – like easy walks or yoga – which can be very beneficial. Keeping your life as stress-free as possible by taking care of your mind and soul, thinking positively and having loving relationships are absolutely necessary parts of healing.

The practice of gratitude is proven to raise your happiness level. Affirmations are wonderful to bring on positive thoughts and to help with creating more positive changes in your life. Journaling is my personal favorite way to deal with negative emotions and release stress. Meditation is a calming and relaxing practice, releasing tension from your mind, body and soul.

Remember, adrenal fatigue doesn’t happen overnight – full recovery can take a little while from several months to upwards of 1-2 years for those in serious adrenal exhaustion. Be patient. Small steps forward create subtle changes leading to a powerful transformation. Making solid changes to your lifestyle with time will ensure lasting results. Aiming for a balanced lifestyle of healthy, organic and whole foods, adequate sleep, loving exercise, a positive attitude, self-love, a healthy environment and happiness will allow you to keep your adrenal system going strong for a long time.
