Cinnamon is one of the most common spices found in the average American’s cupboard. And for good reason! It is delicious, flavorful, versatile and packed with an impressive amount of benefits.

Cinnamon has been prized for thousands of years for its medicinal properties. This delicious bark has also been dated back to the Egyptian times, regarded as a gift for royalty.

DID YOU KNOW: Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices in recorded history! It is mentioned in the bible and in other old manuscripts from ancient Egypt.

The Health Benefits Of Cinnamon

Because cinnamon is such a super-star in the nutrient category, we made sure to include it in our new Complete Protein powder! Be sure to check out the details at the bottom of this post.

Antioxidant Powerhouse

Cinnamon contains large amounts of highly potent polyphenol antioxidants. In a study that compared the antioxidant activity of 26 spices, cinnamon wound up as the clear winner, even outranking “superfoods” like garlic and oregano.

Antioxidants are important for the body to fight free radicals that may otherwise cause illness and disease.

Antidiabetic

Cinnamon has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to improve digestion and help with symptoms of diabetes. It has been shown to significantly increase sensitivity to the hormone insulin. Cinnamon has been shown to both reduce fasting blood sugar levels by up to 10-29% at doses as low as 1-6 grams a day.

Heart Health

Did you know that the #1 cause of premature death in the world is heart disease?

Several studies have been done showing the benefits of cinnamon on the heart. Researchers have found that just small doses of cinnamon (120 milligrams a day) have potential to lower “bad” cholesterol while stabilizing good cholesterol. This also aids in reducing blood pressure.

Anticarcinogenic

Water-soluble cinnamon extract has shown to be able to inhibit the growth and spread of different cancers in laboratory cell cultures of various types of cancer that include melanoma, lymphoma, colon, colorectal and cervical cancer.

In the different mice models with melanoma, the cinnamon extract was orally administered and was able to significantly inhibit tumor growth.

See studies here, here, here and here.

Antifungal

Cinnamon oil has been found effective in aiding fungal infections, especially in the respiratory tract.

Antibacterial

Studies have found that cinnamon acts as a potent antibacterial against such bacterias as Listeria and Salmonella.

Anti Inflammatory

Chronic inflammation is at the root of all disease that is afflicting society today. Although inflammation is the body’s natural response to infections and tissue damage, when left unchecked due to poor dietary and lifestyle choices, it can wreck havoc on the body.

Studies have found that the antioxidants in cinnamon also have strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Brain Health

The smell of cinnamon increases cognitive function by 15%! Research has found that cinnamon may have many benefits for the brain because its compounds help inhibit protein buildup. Tau is a protein that builds up in the brain and is a leading symptom of neurodegenerative disease.

Cravings

Cinnamon is a warming spice that has been shown to help with sugar cravings. It does this by controlling blood sugar levels and minimizing insulin spikes, which would otherwise cause post-meal cravings.

Sugar Substitute

Sugar causes inflammation and inflammation causes disease. Cinnamon, however, is full of amazing benefits, plus it’s delicious! Do you put sugar in your morning coffee? Try adding cinnamon instead. You can also use it in the place of sugar in your oatmeal, tea, cereal and smoothies.

How To Use Cinnamon For Optimum Benefits

There are four different types of cinnamon. Ceylon, Cassia, Saigon and Korintje. They each vary slightly in texture, color and flavor.

Ceylon cinnamon is the “true” cinnamon and the one you want to look for when shopping at the market. It is high in a substance called cinnamaldehyde, which is responsible for cinnamon’s health benefits. You can buy it in bulk at the store, in powder form or use it in protein powders for flavor.
