Resetting your digestion

You already understand how important diet is to muscle growth and fat loss.

You know what you need to be eating.

You know that cardio will help you lose weight and burn fat.

But if you do not understand how important your digestion is you could be messing it all up. (For realz)

The foods you eat are literally the building blocks for all muscle growth you experience.

You can’t build muscle and get “toned and firm” for the ladies if you aren’t extracting the “right” kinds of food and the nutrients therein.

What am I talking about?

Simple. You could be eating all the right kinds of food, doing all the right things.. but if you are not digesting the foods properly you are screwing it all up. The sad part

Truth is, almost all of the students I coach on a 1 on 1 basis don’t know shit when it comes to their poop. (Sorry mom)

This is the single biggest reason why you will struggle to change your body significantly

The reason I’m such a huge proponent of juicing vegetables is for this reason.

Juicing Resets The System (Free Juicing Presentation)

In this post, I’m going to layout other things you can do right now, to get your shit together.

This method will essentially reset every other aspect of how smoothly your body functions, which especially includes how much muscle you can build and how much fat you can lose.

Here’s how your digestion is sabotaging your results:

After drinking on the weekends, binge eating every holiday and sometimes during football games and other social outlets your body’s digestive system essentially becomes clogged up and overstressed, which – among a huge range of other problems – prevents muscle growth and fat loss from occurring.

This is common today with each American having access to 4000 calories of shitty food on a daily basis.

It’s cheap, fast, and easy. Why not eat it right?

This mentality is also equally as big in the weight lifting community.

Have you ever heard

“Eat Like A Horse, Train Like An Animal, Sleep Like a Baby and Grow Like A Weed?”

This statement is only partially true.

The first part about eating like a horse is bull shit.

This expression is common problem for bodybuilders who have been told to “eat big to get big” – and end up sabotaging their results by over-doing it and stressing their digestive system with too much food for too long.

Due to mucus build-ups and over-taxed digestive systems, full break-down of foods becomes nearly impossible after a while…

…which means your body is unable to extract from every food you eat all the essential macro-and-micro nutrients it needs to function normally…

…which also means you won’t have the resources to build muscle and lose fat. Period.

If putting on muscle and/or losing fat doesn’t come easy to you, chances are pretty solid that you are suffering from poor digestion right now.

The most common digestion problems

  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Flatulence
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Fullness
  • Nausea
    Rectal itching
  • Weak, cracked finger nails
  • Acne
  • Iron deficiency
  • Parasites
  • Candida
  • Food allergies
  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Hives
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea
  • B12 deficiency
  • Arthritis

But when the short-term fixes don’t do the trick, the Juice Up Your Life – Reset is the solution.

Let’s get into how it works.

The Juice Reset

This is a 5 day juice fasting plan.

My transformation clients use this for the first 5 days of their transformation program.

Essentially this means that, for a period of five days, you will actually be eating almost no food – and the food you do put in your system is strategically used to clear your digestive tract. There is also no weight training allowed during this week.

I know a lot of guys get nervous when they hear this. Won’t you lose muscle mass? Is this just a starvation plan? How can not eating food make me build more muscle?

So there are a few quick notes I have to make…

  • This is NOT a starvation plan! This is a simple effective way for clearing out all of the old crud you’ve been holding onto. You will be amazed at how much more energy you have after this process takes place.
  • You will NOT lose muscle doing this, but will build lots more afterward! Trust me, 5 days is not enough time to lose muscle. You will not gain muscle during the 5 days either but afterwards you will pile on lean muscle faster then ever before.

The fasting rules

How the fast is performed:

Days 1, 2, and 3:

  • Drink as much water as possible throughout the day, preferably with a little bit of lemon juice squeezed in (unlimited amounts)
  • Drink up to 2 cups of fresh fruit and vegetable juice every three hours (from 10 to 12 cups a day). “Fresh” means 1. straight out of a juicer from real fruits and vegetables, and if that’s not possible, 2. any juice at all that says it is from 100% fruit or vegetable juice. I would personally juice more vegetables then anything else.
  • Do not drink the juice unless you feel you need it! Do not force-feed yourself juice.
  • Take 1 tbsp psyllium husk with two cups of water immediately after waking up and immediately before bed. Check the ingredients on many popular fiber supplements and you will find they are made from psyllium. If you are unable to get ANY psyllium at all, and you know this for a fact, then any non-flavored fiber supplement will do.
  • Take a probiotic twice a day as well. Once in the morning and once at night before bed. I use Green Vibrance.

Day 4 and 5:

Start to interject egg whites and lean white fish for protein. 3 times a day.

Days 6 and 7:

  • Slowly ease back into the New Lean diet.

It’s important to note: there is no cheat day or treat meal on the fast.

When to fast:

Immediately before beginning your routine (week 1)

Chances are, you’re not fully digesting your foods properly now. Very few people do.

By doing a 5 day fast before jumping into the full weight training and diet routine, you will significantly enhance the results you see in the following weeks.

In fact, the results you experience will feel almost unnatural. This is one of the big keys to maximum muscle growth and fat loss at the same time – your body will, for the first time in a long time, actually be breaking down, digesting, and using all the nutrients you provide it.

I can’t promise great results if you skip out on the 5 day fast

This is what happened to me when I started to pay attention to my poo poo.

Immediately after one round of your routine (week 15)

What to expect during/after the fast:

Sluggish, tired in the first three days

Your body will likely end up feeling pretty sluggish and tired for at least the first three days of this program. Your brain may get a bit foggy, and in some cases, you may even experience sores developing in your mouth.

This is normal. Your body is healing years of negative abuse you put it under.

If you’ve fasted any time in the past, it’s not abnormal to feel completely normal in the days you aren’t eating any solid foods. The body is able to adjust and adapt fairly quickly to this.

Regular bowel movements and lots of peeing

Even though you’re hardly putting anything in your body, you should be experiencing regular bowel movements. In some cases lots of small poops. This is what a poop should look like.

Some people will experience lots of trips to the bathroom during the fast, and others may only have it happen a few times. (Often, if you don’t experience lots of bowel movements during the fast, you’ll experience it afterward when you transition back to whole foods.)

Also expect to pee. A lot. Again, your body is flushing everything out of your system. (If it burns when you pee, you have other problems)

Increase in bowel movements afterward

As you transition back to the diet you will experience regular bowel movements. My bowel movements are like clock work. I normally drop the California Raisins off at the Super Bowl after every meal.

What are the best juices to drink?

Preferably vegetable juices straight from your juicer. Check out the video below for an easy recipe.

Here is the juice that I do most of the time when I’m fasting.

  1. Thanks for the article Drew. You are so right! More people need to know about this. I don't know how many people I know think that pooping every few day's is normal??? Yikes!

  2. Totally true, I found that when I went on a detox diet which is similar I felt a lot fitter after about two weeks. In the UK we have a lady who looks at peoples poo on TV - lol, unfortunately she has inherited a rather unflattering nick name!

  3. Hey Drew!

I am currently on day 3 and have been only having vegetable juices for the last 3 days. I have however not had any bowel movements in the last 2days. Just wanted to check it that is ok or if i should change anything?

  4. Excellent article. Did not love the pic of the poop but understand why it was shown. Im going to try this at the start of next month.
