Proven Alternatives To Achieve New Year’s Resolutions
Written by: Kat Gal
So, you are not a resolution person. You either don’t make them or simply don’t keep them. Don’t worry, there are some fantastic alternative ways to create your dreams and achieve your goals.
Millions of people make New Year’s resolutions every year, yet only about 8% of them achieve them. Gyms are empty by February, people are back on junk food and morning routines are replaced with sleeping in.
Let’s talk about big goals you set during the year. Many people still fail. The “I will start Monday” approach is always about next Monday and may last until Tuesday. The large majority of people who lose weight will gain it back within a year – and then some – and get on the roller coaster of yo-yo dieting.
If you recognize yourself reading this, it is not your fault. Resolutions and big goals can be overwhelming. An all or nothing, black and white mindset can be too much of a change that may subconsciously scare you back to your comfort zone.
The cold-turkey approach works for some, but most people benefit from small steps and subtle shifts. It is about progression, not perfection, after all.
Here are 3 proven alternatives to resolutions and big goals that can help you successfully transform your life this year:
1. Pick One Word To Focus On All Year
We all want a little fairy to transform all areas of our entire lives in one second. But this is not how it works unfortunately.
Think about all the most important things you want to achieve this year. Then pick one word that encompasses all these things. This one word will symbolize the bigger picture of what you want for yourself this year.
If you want to lose weight, get fit, feel energized, eat healthy and so one, your word may be ‘wellness’ or ‘health.’ If you are looking for a job that you love, for your purpose, for happy relationships and for more smiles, you may want to pick ‘fulfillment.’ Make it a positive word.
Whenever you are facing a decision or a small choice, think about this word and let it help guide you.
2. Do More Of What’s Good
Instead of trying to fix or erase what’s not working, figure out what IS working and do more of it. Are you already eating a healthy breakfast 2-3 times a week? Why not try to make it 4-5 (or heck, even 6-7) times, then add some healthy lunches, snacks and dinners. If you love yoga, keep at it. Do you know some authors or blogs that inspire and uplift you? Read more of them.
As you add more positive, healthy and happy things to your life, the less room you will have for negative, unhealthy and unhappy stuff. You will slowly crowd out the junk by adding more awesome in.
3. Choose 12 Mini-Goals
This is especially great for you if you are overwhelmed by big goals. This will also work if you are a list-maker or a planner. Instead of having a huge vague goal, break it down into 12 specific mini-goals, one goal for each month.
If your goal is to transform your health, in January you may want to focus on hydration, in February you may want to increase your greens by slowly adding more greens to each meal, in March you may want to mix up your exercise routine, in April you may want to focus on your mindset through meditation and journaling and so on.
Create a calendar with your mini-goals. Track your progress and celebrate each small step forward.
Remember, working towards your goals is a process. You will experience ups and downs during your journey. It is all about learning experiences and progress. Never be afraid to try, never be afraid to reach for your dreams, you may just achieve way more than you bargained for.
