Protect Yourself From Mosquitoes With This DIY Homemade Mosquito Repellent

For this Saturday Strategy, we’re going to teach you how to make an all-organic, save-your-life, DIY mosquito repellent!

Mosquitos are the number one killer on the planet. Don’t believe me? Just check out these facts! (I know, I was shocked too!)

  • Mosquitoes kill more people than human murderers do.
  • There are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes.
  • Mosquitoes can drink up to 3 times their weight in blood.
  • Mosquitoes carry and transmit many dangerous diseases including malaria, dengue, west nile virus, encephalitis, Zika virus and more.

Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. We are going to teach you to protect yourself with an all-natural mosquito repellent.

What Is Wrong With Traditional Mosquito Repellent?

Mosquitoes are dangerous – that’s one of the reasons people use mosquito repellent. They also itch like CRAY CRAY! But what if the repellent is toxic to your health? They say not to put dangerous chemicals on your skin, as it can end up in your blood stream. But the truth is, traditional bug repellents contain many harsh chemicals that may do more harm than good. The main ingredient in these store-bought products is the real kicker!

Insert…

DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-tolumide) – A chemical found in most bug repellents, DEET was developed in the 1940’s and used by the U.S. Army for jungle warfare. Although extremely effective at repelling bugs, some studies have found that it may affect nervous system function by blocking important enzymes that transmit messages to the brain. The EPA placed DEET as a category 3, or “slightly toxic.”

DIY Organic Mosquito Repellent

Instead of using ANY toxic chemicals on your skin, why not whip together your own all-natural plant based mosquito repellent?

Ingredients/Supplies:

  • 1 small spray bottle
  • 3 ounces water
  • 10 drops eucalyptus oil
  • 10 drops of lemon oil
  • 5 drops of peppermint oil
  • 3 ounces of witch hazel
  • 1 tsp rubbing alcohol

Directions: Mix all the ingredients together and then pour into your spray bottle. Use as needed!

Benefits Of Essential Oils

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus is an energizing oil that people have found most useful for helping the respiratory system. It is a natural decongestant and can help relieve tight airways that often come with asthma attacks or cold and flu season. You can make a salve with eucalyptus oil to apply to the chest, cup in hands and inhale, or diffuse in a room. It is one of the best oils for helping with a runny nose.

Because eucalyptus is a natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, some people have found it to be helpful with symptoms of fibromyalgia, arthritis and shingles when applied topically to painful areas. Eucalyptus has a powerful scent and is often an effective bug repellent.

Note: It is still in question whether or not Eucalyptus oil is safe for children under 2.

Lemon oil

Lemon is great for cleaning the home and for taking care of your body! You can mix it with water in a spray bottle to freshen up a room or put a few drops on a rag with warm water to wipe down the counters and get grease off the stove. You can even throw a drop or two into the washing machine to get out unwanted odors.

Lemon is an uplifting oil and is great for detox and cleansing. You can put a few drops in a glass of water for an energy/cleansing boost and to help with focus. You can also use lemon in a facial scrub to help remove dead skin.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint is commonly used for digestive upset or gastrointestinal issues. You can rub it on your belly/abdomen and on the bottom of your feet and use it in tea. Peppermint oil is more concentrated than peppermint leaves, so one drop in some tea can do wonders. Peppermint is great for mental alertness and focus, especially when you are feeling sleepy.

Rub together a drop or two in your hands and cup around your nose and mouth and inhale. You can also rub it behind your ears. Peppermint is also good for sore muscles and joints and can be applied topically to areas that ache. Oh… and spiders HATE peppermint. Spray or diffuse some around your room to keep away the eight-legged friends!

Other Tips To Avoid Mosquito Bites

  • Wear light colors
  • Don’t spend a lot of time near standing water
  • Once a week, empty and scrub things that hold water like tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots, etc.
  • Use an insect net
  • Indoors, keep air circulated
  • Keep the vitamin, thiamin (vitamin B1) in your diet
  • Avoid prime times for mosquitoes
  • Wear long sleeve shirts and pants
  • Use screens on windows and doors
  • Keep mosquito-repelling plants around the house

Enjoy the outdoors without fearing mosquitoes and other creepy bugs with natural plant-based mosquito repellent. Be sure to share with your friends so that they can have a bug-free summer as well.
