Positive Thinking Can Completely Transform Your Life

As far back as I can remember, I have been drawn to messages about thoughtfulness, strength, self-talk and positive thinking.

We all have a memory where positive thinking molded us.

My first strong memory about this idea of positive thinking starts with my high school coach, who loved my spirit, but was challenged with my tenacity to do things my own way. She bestowed this quote on me:

“The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.” ~ Walter Bagehot.

I always knew that it was her way of both acknowledging how challenging I was to her and, at the same time, encouraging me to continue on my path. It always made me smirk to know that the message was twofold!

That message, given to me 40 years ago, has stayed in my head and has carried me through thousands of times where I had to believe in my own abilities rather than rely on what others thought. It was the positive elements of that message that helped to mold me into the person I became.

Positive thinking works, whether you believe it or not.

Today, the idea of positive thinking is everywhere, yet there is also scepticism. On one side, there are those who believe in spiritual guidance and the power of the Universe.  But on the other side, there are sceptics that believe simply thinking a certain way can’t change anything. The truth is, though, that even the skeptics can propel forward, overcome obstacles and find their way through taking on a positive outlook.

When you anticipate happiness, health and even success, your entire belief system aligns to motivate you towards taking action.

Studies continue to explore not just how positive thinking improves the flow and outcomes of life, but also the effects it may have on health.

According to the Mayo Clinic, positive thinking may even include these health benefits:


  • Increased life span
  • Better psychology and physical well-being
  • Lower levels of distress and depression
  • Better coping skills
  • Improved resistance to the common cold
  • Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease

Everyone chooses the direction of their thoughts.

Too often, many people do not consciously realize how thoughts affect life. There is a snowballing effect that thoughts have on life, because the choices you make and the way you think change the way you function and direct how your thoughts materialize into action. Looking at it this way, embracing an optimistic outlook can really only make life better, whether you realize it or not.

Positive thinking exercises are easy and fun to do.

Try these positive thinking tools to begin to reset how your mind works or just to supercharge your already positive approach. And be patient, because changing your thought patterns and attitude does not happen overnight.

1. Embrace Smiling! – Yes, simply smiling will change everything about your day, starting with affecting how your brain works by releasing positive hormones to get you on your way.

2. Put A Positive Spin On Your Self-Talk Reframe how you speak to yourself. “I can’t do that,” can turn into, “I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to do that.” Try using this same strategy with how you talk to others too.

3. Use Daily Affirmations Affirmations can be used to support any and all of your goals. Say them out loud and face to face with yourself in a mirror for maximum effect. I love affirmation cards – I keep one with me each day and often hand them out to clients.

4. Embrace Gratitude – Once a day, morning or night, reflect on a few of the positive things you have in your own life.

5. Visualize Your Positive Outcomes – Creating a mental picture of the outcome you want and attaching emotions to it will help to mobilize you into action.

People often become what they believe themselves to be, so your goal is to create a new belief system where you ultimately know in your core all that you are capable of. Go on, dive in. Smile big and wide to the next person you encounter or even right now! It will feel good and you will be on you way, having taken that first step.lleader_34 (1)
