New Stem Cell Treatment Can Save You From A Root Canal
Ask me about root canals and I will tell you about the time when I had an emergency root canal in Kenya.
Despite my visit to my dentist several weeks before departure, a few days after I arrived I woke up with an excruciating toothache. After a few more days with pain, there was no choice but to find a dentist. It turned out I needed a root canal. Three visits and a hefty bill later, it was all fine.
While a root canal prevents tooth extraction, allowing you to keep your natural – but dead – tooth, it is not healthy. Root canals may be dangerous and can lead to a weakened immune system, autoimmune disease, neurological disease, joint issues and arthritis, among other issues. Many health advocates claim that they would never get one, but as someone with two root canals, I feel that sometimes there is no better alternative if you want to prevent extraction.
Or is there?
There is a light in the tunnel, as researchers from the University of Nottingham and Harvard University have developed remarkable regenerative dental fillings. These new fillings use the stem cells inside your teeth to repair tissue damage. This new invention may prevent and become an alternative to root canals.
When you get a root canal, the pulp of your tooth and the nerves in the area are being removed. Not with this new treatment. These new fillings made of synthetic biomaterials stimulate dental stems cells in your mouth and would repair and regenerate dentin, the bony substance in your tooth.
Stem cells can be used for a variety of functions in your body, including repairs. They are currently used to help spinal cord injuries, diabetes and arthritis. Could this new idea be next in helping patients with dental issues?
What do you think? Have you ever had a root canal? Would you undergo this stem cell treatment? Why or why not? Share your thoughts in the comments below. As always, we’d love to hear from you.
