Natural Ways To Fight Allergies

Allergy season is right around the corner. For many parts of the country with this crazy weather, however, allergy season never really ended and it is causing a problem for many people.

Allergies make you feel tired and run down and sometimes just downright miserable. They are a constant issue for many people around the country. In fact, roughly 50 million Americans deal with some sort of allergies and the number does not seem like it will reduce anytime soon.

So, what do you do about these allergies? Well, you could start by taking an over-the-counter antihistamine or a decongestant, but that is just adding harmful chemicals to your body and you don’t want that.

Here’s What You Can Do Instead:

  • Get Spicy. Not many people realize it, but adding certain spices into your recipes can really knock out that nasty nasal congestion. The best types of spices to add to your recipes include any type of peppery spice that contains capsaicin. This includes jalapenos, chili peppers, habaneros and tabasco. The capsaicin found in the peppers actually works against nasal congestion and helps to relieve not only that, but also sneezing, coughing and the production of mucus. Try adding one of these peppers into your favorite soup or chili.
  • Eat Horseradish. Not many people like horseradish, but it gives off enough spice to help do the job. Horseradish acts as a natural antibiotic and can help to clear your nose of that nasty gunk. It helps to remedy allergies and sinus infections all while encouraging your body to remove mucus from your respiratory system. You can easily grate horseradish into a glass of tomato juice and drink it or mix it in your salsa for a spicy treat.
  • Sniff Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus works by opening up your sinuses and lungs. Doing so helps to improve circulation as well as reduce allergy symptoms. Eucalyptus contains a chemical called citronellal, which has anti-inflammatory properties that also work as an expectorant. You can diffuse a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil in your favorite diffuser, add a few drops of essential oil to your bath or shower, or even purchase a strand of eucalyptus leaves and hang it in your shower.
  • Turn To The Heat. This means to warm up your nose and sinus cavities. You can simply grab a washcloth, heat it up under hot water and lay it across your nose and where your sinus cavities are located; just make sure that the warmth of the washcloth is what you can handle and not TOO hot! The heat will help to loosen the gunk lodged in your nose and sinus cavities.
  • Get Steamy. This includes using eucalyptus and rosemary herbs. Put 1 tablespoon of rosemary and 1 tablespoon of eucalyptus into 1 cup of boiling water. Place a towel over your head to make a tent. Sniff in the fumes for 5 minutes, but be careful to not scald your face and lower your face slowly over the steam. The eucalyptus works as an expectorant to help loosen and remove mucus while the rosemary works as an anti-inflammatory to help reduce inflammation.
