Natural Remedies To Prevent Asthma Attacks

Written by: Brandi Monasco

Asthma is a chronic condition that involves the airways down in your lungs. These are the airways that allow air to come into and out of your lungs. With asthma, your airways are always inflamed, meaning that they are constantly swollen and your airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms.

When your symptoms are triggered, it becomes hard to breathe because it is difficult for air to move in and out of your chest. You may even have some coughing, chest tightness and wheezing.

About 1 in 12 people have asthma and the numbers only continue to rise. Asthma patients in the United States pay about $56 billion per year just in medical costs associated with asthma.

For many people with asthma, there are several triggers that can cause an attack:

  • Allergens such as pollen
  • Animal dander (animal hair, dry skin)
  • Over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin
  • Exercise
  • Emotional stress
  • Food additives such as dyes and flavorings
  • Food allergies
  • Household cleaners and chemicals
  • Fresh paint
  • Tobacco smoke

When it comes to food, here are 3 things to remember that can help prevent your asthma from flaring up:

1. Avoid processed foods such as cookies, chips, cheeses, canned and frozen foods that contain additives, preservatives, flavor enhancers and dyes.

2. Avoid excess refined sugar and refined white flour.

3. Avoid caffeine as it can put added stress on your adrenal glands.

While having asthma does require the use of prescription medications, there are also supplements that can be taken to help control it:

  • Vitamin C: Taking 1,000 to 4,000 milligrams of vitamin C3 4 times per day can help prevent the allergies that often cause asthma symptoms. Vitamin C helps to lower your body’s histamine levels and prevents the formation of histamine. Taking vitamin C also helps in supporting your adrenal glands.
  • Vitamin A: Taking up to 50,000 IU each day (in divided doses of course) can help mend mucous membranes in your airways and can help prevent against infections. Vitamin A is also considered as an antioxidant that can also help prevent exercise-induced asthma.
  • Magnesium: Often times, people with asthma could have a low level of magnesium. Magnesium is a powerful antioxidant that helps to regulate and decrease your body’s histamine production, which is the main cause of asthma symptoms. Taking 200 to 300 milligrams three times a day can help reduce histamine related symptoms.
  • Fish Oil: Taking between 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams of fish oil each day can reduce the inflammation that goes along with asthma.

Asthma is not a condition to take lightly, especially when you are having severe symptoms. There are many different ways that you can remedy and control your asthma if you are not comfortable with taking prescription medications. Give some of these a fair shot and let us know how it goes.
