Natural Homemade Laundry Soap

To be honest, I always wanted to swap out my conventional laundry detergents. At the time, I didn’t know anything about natural alternatives or where to begin. Nowadays, you can likely buy an eco-friendly laundry soap from your local health food store, but this recipe is much cheaper and fun to make. In addition, it works well!

Natural Homemade Laundry Soap
  • 2.5 oz. grated soap (look for pure ingredients, no fillers or chemicals)
  • ½ cup of washing soda (sodium carbonate)
  • ½ cup of borax
  • About 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice (lavender, lemon and orange are some of my favorite options)
  1. Grate your soap with a cheese grater or a food processor.
  2. Next, you’ll need to decide if you want to make a laundry powder or a liquid laundry soap.

  3. For Laundry Powder:

  4. Put all the above mentioned ingredients into a food processor and process them until you get a fine powder.
  5. Use 1-2 tablespoons of this per load of laundry.

  6. For Liquid Laundry Soap:

  7. Put the grated soap into a bowl and add 4 cups of boiling hot water.
  8. Mix them until the soap completely dissolves.
  9. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix them well. You can use a hand blender to accelerate the process.
  10. Store this in a glass jar.
The suggested amount is ¼ per load of laundry.

And there you have it! Easy DIY detergent you can count on to be natural, without questionable ingredients.
