My Transformation And My Love Affair With Food*

The Fitlife transformation program changed my love affair with food and my concept of health and nutrition forever. I guess you could say that my transformation with Fitlife was my second time around; yet, I can truly admit, with this transformation, my whole idea of food, health, nutrition and weight loss has truly transformed.
Growing up, I was always on the bigger side – or chunky, as they call it – and stayed that way until I was in college. I always saw the smaller girls get the attention and felt that they acted as though they were prettier than me.
Since I can remember, I have always suffered from eczema. I remember my mother putting those mittens on my hands before I went to sleep, just to keep me from scratching my skin raw. As I got older, I began having very painful migraines that always began with an aura on the right side of my face and would evolve into a full fledged migraine – you know the kind I’m talking about, where it hurts to see light and hear sounds and you just want to dig a hole in the ground and bury yourself.
I remember thinking that this was no way to live – I truly needed a change.
Like most of us out there, I was always in the dark when it came to pairing my foods and fitness. The popular belief is that less food and more fitness equals phenomenal results and the “hot body” that everyone covets.
With the wonderful lessons from Fitlife, however, I learned that I can still eat – actually, more than I used to – and still lose weight effortlessly. Please don’t get me wrong, it takes discipline and consistency, but you get to eat great fats like avocado and olives and lean protein like steak. And I’ve never felt hungry or deprived.
When I began this transformation journey, my aim was not just to lose weight, but rather, understand how food works in the body, what foods are friends and what foods were foe. I practice envisioning myself as somewhat of a lean mean machine and at my peak, I am agile, fast, super healthy and overall radiant.
I wanted to understand what foods could help heal my body. Because, simply put, I saw myself as a dream, but never quite knew how to get from where I was to where I ultimately needed and wanted to be.
I always seemed to stay stagnant in my weight, no matter how hard and often I exercised. It was a challenge for me, working with my ideas about eating less and exercising more.
I had allergies and sensitivities to tomatoes and beans and I remember thinking and lamenting to my mother, “if I can’t eat tomatoes and beans, what am I going to eat?” I love tomatoes and beans and in most of my meals, I always had these in my meals and being allergic to them really posed a challenge. I always associated tomato with healthy eating habits, yet my body totally hated them and would reward me with huge, sensitive, gigantic, very visible, itchy hives.
The good news is that, with the help of my coach Paula, we were able to substitute the tomato with other fruits and vegetables, found that there are some beans that I’m not allergic to and came up with strategic ways to implement tomatoes in small doses. The most exciting part for me was that through the process, I was able to reintroduce tomato into my diet and have had no flares!
And bonus, I found that I have lost twenty pounds and four inches in the waist, legs and thighs and most importantly, I feel healthy from within. Every day I’m getting closer to the vision I have for myself.
A big challenge for me was giving up my French fries; they are my favorite indulgence. During my transformation, there have been times where I have “failed forward” and had some fries, but my body has been able to continuously heal and better yet, I’ve slowly begin to change my taste buds for the better.
I would be remissed if I didn’t thank the Fitlife team and my coach Paula, who supported me through every step of my transformation as I learned to love my body, understand the power of whole foods, rekindle my juicing flame and appreciate the beauty of hydrating water, bone broth and kombucha.
It’s been a long journey, but a beautiful one at that. I am proud of myself and look forward to continuing to grow, learn and come into my own as the best version of myself possible.
