Shirts and dresses and shoes – OH MY!

Do you ever open your closet and stare in disbelief, wondering WHAT is WHERE and think, “HOW did this happen?”

You can’t find what you need and at least one thing falls from the top shelf and almost knocks you out every time you open the door.

What a nightmare!

Furthermore, is that a shirt from college that you used to wear out on the town 15 years ago hiding in the back of your closet?

Not only is your closet NOT a history museum, it also is not a place that should give you a fright every time you go to get dressed.

No matter how messy your closet is, don’t you worry – I’ ve got you covered, because I am a closet ninja!

Give me a messy and disorganized closet and you will be sure to see a twinkle of excitement in my eye. I love to bring order and efficiency to the craziest of closets. I’ve helped many a friend calm their closet chaos. Here are the top tips that will help you organize your wardrobe and clear that source of stress from your life.

7 Tips To Organize Your Wardrobe

Take It ALL Out
  • COMPLETELY clear out your closet of all your items.
  • Any item that returns to the closet must then be physically touched and processed by YOU before returning back to the closet.
  • Yes – it will make you bedroom look like a bomb went off, but it will also motivate you to “get it done!”
Arrange Clothes From White To Black
  • From left to right, hang your clothes from lightest to darkest.
  • Helps you find what you want FAST!
  • Your closet will instantly look more organized and pretty by doing JUST this.
Line ‘Em Up
  • Hang all items facing the same direction
  • Makes it simple to browse and find what you need.
Create Sections
  • Designate a place for:
    • Shirts
    • Pants
    • Dresses
    • Formal wear
  • Arrange each section from light to dark.
  • Take posterboard to hang between sections to further visually separate your sections.
“Good Vibes Only” Rule
    • If ANYTHING you look at in your closet brings back negative memories, consider moving on from it:
      • Example: Pants that fit 15 pounds ago that have been sitting in your closet for YEARS.
        • Unless you plan on taking action today on losing the weight, donate them or box them up and put them in storage for now.
      • Example: Jewelry, watches and other gifts that you received from an ex-partner that bring up unpleasant memories and negative emotions.
        • Consider selling these items and using the money to purchase something new for yourself that you can love and feel good about.
    • Keep clothes that make you feel GREAT when wearing them.
      • When you keep clothes that you don’t feel so good about, they clutter your closet and make it more difficult to get dressed, because they act as a distraction when you are looking for something to wear.
Back To The Basics
    • Sort through your closet and make sure it has a solid foundation of basics that can be mixed and matched.
    • Basics stand the “test of time” and can be worn season after season and year after year and still be “in style”:
      • White and black t-shirt and tank top
      • Dark denim
      • Light denim
      • Little black dress
      • Blazer
      • Tailored dress pants
      • Whatever other “basics” that suit your style such as cardigans, sweaters, blouses, etc.
Reverse Your Hangers
  • As you are organizing your closet and put the clothes back in, hook the hangers on the pole so that the hook is facing towards the back of your closet.
  • As you wear each piece, when you return them back to the closet, hang them the “normal” way with the back of hook now facing you.
  • After 1 year, anything that is still in the original position needs to be taken out and donated.
