In a world full of questionable chemicals and ingredients, it is nice to know that our ancestors had an answer for many of our problems today.

Sometimes the best way to care for yourself and your family is to take the time to make some alternative products yourself. Not only do you take back the power of your own health and wellness, but you also learn about the incredible natural world all around you.

For too many years now, the vast majority of household products have been made in factories, creating an entire generation of people who are unaware of where these items once came from; the earth.

With that being said, let’s get to know one of the more gentle, safe herbs that you should start welcoming into your home – the marshmallow plant.

The Marshmallow Plant

The marshmallow herb is a flowering plant that has been used in medicine since long before the greeks and the Romans. This plant – which is full of vitamin B, polysaccharides, beta-carotene and calcium – can be used in both food dishes and as a medicinal herb.

Once used to make marshmallow, this plant grows almost everywhere in the United States and is easy to recognize with its lobed rounded leaves and pink flowers. The leaves can simply be thrown into a salad or smoothie or even used to make complex dishes such as mallow gumbo.

Mallow Medicinal Power

Because of how the mallow roots well up when they come in contact with water (just imagine a marshmallow treat), they have long been used as an anti inflammatory agent as well as a tool to soothe irritation. This plant is famous for helping with kidney and bladder problems. The marshmallow can neutralize stomach acid which can ultimately help you recover from an ulcer.

Externally, marshmallow plant is great for soothing irritated skin. When your skin is dry and chapped, you can take some chamomile tea and mix it with the marshmallow to create a soothing moisturizer. This is a great herb for relieving itchy, dry skin as well as eczema.

Marshmallow Baby Powder
Especially when it comes to your little ones, using gentle herbs such as marshmallow can be a great addition to their hygienic care. This recipe in particular is an excellent all-natural, safe and effective powder for helping and even preventing diaper rash.
  • 1 part arrowroot powder
  • 1 part cornstarch
  • 1 part marshmallow root powder
  • 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil
  1. First you will want to mix the powders together in a large bowl (a wire whisk works well for this).
  2. Next add a drop or two of the lavender essential oil and whisk in well. Cover with a thick cotton towel and let sit overnight in a dry room; this will allow the oil and powder to dry. Whisk again and package in a powder container for easy application.

How To Use This Powder

It’s pretty straightforward – just sprinkle the powder over the baby’s little bottom as needed to absorb excess moisture.

If you are looking to go a more natural route with your little ones, then this mallow baby powder may be exactly what you are looking for. The best reason I see that babies benefit from this is not having any added chemicals going into their skin. This mallow powder allows for a completely 100% all-natural baby powder.
