Ladies, Ditch The Makeup – You’re Beautiful The Way You Are
Written by: Kat Gal
Let’s have a little talk, woman to woman… about makeup.
I was about 13 when my mom first let me use makeup. I still remember how excited I was about the cheap blue eye shadows and black mascara.
To be honest, I was never good at makeup. My mom didn’t know much about it, I didn’t study magazine’s enough and it was before the time of magical youtube tutorials. I never used foundation, powder, lip liner or lipstick, only eye shadows and mascara. But you would not catch me leaving my house without those 2 ingredients for the next 15-16 years. The only exceptions were track meets, cross country races and road races. Still, sometimes I snuck a bit of waterproof mascara on, just in case.
Then I started traveling the world full-time. I worked in remote villages in developing countries, volunteered at farms, eco-projects and hostels, I backpacked and hitchhiked, I house sat and went on crazy adventures. Makeup simply didn’t fit into my lifestyle anymore.
I stopped wearing it every day and eventually completely ditched using it altogether. It wasn’t so much a radical decision as it was a simple convenience, but it changed my life.
I never went back to using makeup, not when I was teaching in Mexico in a professional environment and not now when I spend most of the year in a U.S. city instead of hauling my backpack around 24/7.
Not wearing makeup helped me appreciate and love my look. I’ve always loved my eyelashes, they are naturally long and I don’t have the need anymore to make them look longer with mascara. I’ve realized that my eyes can be beautiful even if they are not ‘popping out’ from unnatural colors. I am not a painting or a clown, I don’t need a mask on: I am a human being who is beautiful just the way she was born. Just like you – you are beautiful, even without your ‘face’ (AKA makeup) on.
Occasionally I still put some light makeup on. It happens maybe 1 or 2 times a year when I am invited to a wedding or an event. I don’t always use it for these special occasions, but once or twice a year I feel like it. In the past, eye-shadow and mascara were an everyday thing, they felt like they were a part of me. But in recent years on these few occasions when I wear makeup now, it actually feels special and I appreciate the little extra while knowing that I don’t need it to be or to feel beautiful.
You will be surprised, but the moment that I felt the most beautiful in my life was not my wedding day or a special occasion.
It happened when I was mushroom hunting in the Turkish mountains. I was wearing baggy oversized Turkish pants that looked like pajamas at least 6 times my size, an old sweater with holes and stains from paint, an oversized man’s old jacket borrowed from my Turkish host and old running shoes. My uncombed hair was in a bun. My cheeks were red from the wind in the mountains. I had a few scrapes from the trees and walking through the forest. Obviously, I had no makeup on. And for some reason I felt beautiful.
Why? I most certainly wasn’t going to be picked to pose for Vogue at that moment. But I felt happy, free and passionate about life. My soul was in an amazing place and I could feel that my inner-beauty was glowing through my eyes. I am not sure if anyone else around me felt the same, but it didn’t matter. I felt amazing. I felt beautiful. That moment I knew that I didn’t need fancy dresses or makeup to be beautiful.
I don’t need makeup to be myself. And you don’t either.
You don’t need to go traveling or mushroom hunting to have a similar epiphany. Your “aha” moment can come in any other context.
If you ditch makeup, it may be weird and uncomfortable at first, but slowly you will start appreciating your natural look and see your natural beauty. You will start getting to know the real you. You will realize that you can be your authentic self without having to hide behind a mask.
It doesn’t mean you should never wear makeup again. Makeup can be a fun creative outlet to express yourself or a bit of extra for a special occasion along with that sexy black dress. But make-up should not define you. It should not determine your self-confidence. It should not cover the true you at all times. You really don’t have to hide.
Just try it. Reduce the makeup you wear. Ditch your makeup for a day or two.
And remember, if and when you wear makeup, please use organic and cruelty-free varieties. Most makeup brands on the market are full of chemicals that will only hurt your skin. Thankfully, there are many organic, natural and cruelty-free varieties out there that are good quality, but don’t harm your health. You can find them in your health food stores, natural beauty stores and online.
