Killing You Sweetly… Why YOU Need to Cut Sugars!

It’s all over the news – we are being bombarded with a “new” addictive substance…

SUGAR.

There is a plethora of information available about sugar and it’s negative effects on the body. The Journal of American Medicine came out last year and confirmed that too much sugar leads to heart disease. Before that, a California-based Endocrinologist, Dr Lustig, was already studying sugar and calling it toxic.

With our ever expanding waistlines and the increasing occurrence of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, the health crisis in the U.S. is skyrocketing. 1 in 3 people have diabetes and heart disease is still the number one killer in this country. This is all being linked to the increased amounts of refined sugars that we, as a country, are consuming.

But the good news is… WE CAN CHANGE THAT!

Sugar consumption has gone up exponentially since the early 1900’s and the average American consumes over 160 lbs of added sugars per year. Why? Processed food and convenience.

So, since knowledge is power, here are some key facts that you need to know – your health may depend on them!

1. Sugar is sugar, no matter the source. Some sources are better than others, such as naturally occurring sugars that come in vegetables and fruit (this is due to the presence of fiber, which slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream). But eating too much sugar – even from natural sources – can still cause the same increased risks over time. The current recommendations for maximum daily allowance of added sugars is 24-36 grams (24 grams for women; 36 grams for men) and the typical American currently consumes 3-5 TIMES that amount daily.

2. Sugar comes by SO many names, it can be really confusing. Ingredients are listed on packages based on the amount of that ingredient that is in the product, so the closer to the top an ingredient is, the more there is. If your chosen item has a sugar type ingredient within the top 3, put it back! Here are just a few that you can start looking for: Fructose, dextrose, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, HFCS-90, maltose, molasses, honey, lactose, brown rice syrup, barley malt, beet sugar, cane juice, carob syrup, dextran, dextrose… and the list goes on and on.

3. “Health” foods have sugar too. “All natural”, “organic” or the label just claims the product is completely healthy, must mean that you’re safe from toxic sugars, right? Think again! Look closely at the label and search for the sources of the sugars. A great example of this is juice products; juice is typically crazy high in sugar. Natural or not, it all still counts. There is a product on the market, touting “green juice” and on the label it says “no added sugar,” BUT the bottle contains 28 grams of sugar per serving and it contains not 1, but 2 servings. That is double the daily recommended amount in just one item!

4. Be a sugar detective. Keep your eyes open for the hidden sugars, things you may not normally think of. Peanut butter, ketchup, barbecue sauce, tomato sauce,  oatmeal and – my favorite – yogurt. Some of these products have large quantities of hidden sweeteners, which makes eating clean an even BIGGER challenge! Clever marketing on the forefront can sway us into a purchase, so in order to make good decisions, flip the package, or better yet, limit processed/packaged foods. Remember, sugar’s not just in cakes and cookies, it’s in just about everything.

As stated above, the recommended allowance of sugar is 24-36 grams, but our current labels don’t really help us keep track of this. The label doesn’t have the percentage like all other components, such as the carbs and fats. After all, if it’s readily 150% or 250% of the daily value, it might actually be helpful!

To put things into perspective for you: 1 tsp = 4 grams. The maximum daily consumption equates to:

Women: 6 teaspoons (24 grams)

Men: 9 teaspoons (36 grams)

So, the limits on sugar are tight, but they are reasonable to implement by making small changes over time. Getting your sugar intake under control is a great step towards overall optimal health!
