10 Early Warning Signs That You Need to Eat More Avocados (for hormone balance)

Did you know that some stores intentionally put chocolate near the aisles with all the tampons and pads? There’s a reason for that (what woman DOESN’T crave chocolate along with other comforting things, like fluffy pillows, fuzzy teddy bears and cuddly kittens during her period?).
I know you’re familiar with that “special time of the month,” that time when you are bloated, in pain, riding an emotional roller-coaster and craving nothing but chocolate.
“But all this is all normal, right?! All women experience this…”
Easy, girl! Just because we all – well, most of us at least – experience this crazy, painful and chocolate-craving time each month, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s normal. Periods shouldn’t be a horrific time, but rather a natural, mostly painless occurrence in your body.
Abnormally painful periods, extreme mood swings or crazy cravings around that time of the month can be a sign of hormonal imbalance in your body. Missing, irregular, too frequent, too heavy or too light periods are warning signs as well. But periods are not the only way hormonal imbalance shows up in your body.
The following are all signs of hormonal imbalance:
- Weight gain/loss without reason
- Missing libido
- Mood swings
- Abnormal (painful, missing, frequent, heavy, etc.) periods
- Hair loss
If you’ve been experiencing painful menstrual cycles and/or suffering from any of the symptoms above, don’t worry – AVOCADOS to the rescue!
Before you get all skeptical and fat-phobic, let me assure you that most of the fat in an avocado is monounsaturated, which actually protects against heart disease and certain cancers – it’s GOOD fat!
Along with the good fats, avocados are also:
- Nutritionally balanced
- Contain nearly all the essential nutrients that your body cannot produce on its own
- Full of antioxidants
- Balance your hormones
- Boost your metabolism
- Fight diseases
- Good for your skin
- Full of fiber
- Contain lots of minerals, like potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron and boron
- Contain essential vitamins, like vitamin E and vitamin Bs
- Possess antibacterial and antifungal properties
- Support a healthy immune system
- Boost brain function
Now that we’ve cleared up how awesome avocados really are, let’s get back to your hormones.
Essential fats are fundamental building blocks for your hormone production. Eating a variety of whole foods high in short, medium and long-chain fatty acids are essential to keeping your hormones balanced.
Along with coconut oil, avocados are by far the best source of these essential fats, which, besides hormone balancing, keep your metabolism and weight in check.
Avocados also contain plant sterols, like beta-sitosterol, that are known for their antiestrogenic properties. By blocking your estrogen receptors in your cells, they reduce estrogen absorption rates. As a result, they increase progesterone levels in women and testosterone in men and ultimately balance out your hormones
By balancing your estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels, avocados can help you have a healthy sex drive, function with high energy and retain lean muscle mass easily, regardless if you are a male or female. If you are a female, it can help you having regular, pain-free and happy periods and allow you to have a healthy pregnancy if you so desire.
One of my favorite ways to get my avocados in is this Easy Guacamole recipe:
You can also add avocados to your:
- 1 avocado
- ½ garlic powder
- ½ t lime juice
- ¼ bell pepper chopped into tiny pieces
- ¼ tomato chopped into tiny pieces
- Cilantro, as desired
- Salt and pepper (optional)
- Cut the avocado in half. Get the pit out. Scoop out the fruit.
- Mix all the avocado, garlic, lime, pepper, tomato and cilantro together. Mash it until desired consistency.
- Add salt and pepper if desired.
Other ways you can balance your hormones besides eating avocados include:
- Consuming coconut oil for essential fats
- Balancing your Omega 3/6 ratios
- Eliminating toxic kitchen and body care products
- Doing interval exercise
- Getting proper sleep
- Limiting coffee
- Quitting your birth control pill or other hormonal form of birth control
- Supplementing with vitamin D
- Adding herbs, like maca, ashwagandha and turmeric into your diet
- Eating a clean, whole foods diet
- Breathe, relax, do yoga
