Keep Your Health Safe With These Essential Food Prep Habits

It’s important to make sure that you are living a healthy lifestyle. That includes exercise, eating clean, nutritious food and even making sure that your mental health is taken care of. However, being healthy actually goes further than just exercise and food. In fact, the habits that you have in your kitchen also affect your health!

Here are a few healthy tips that you may or may not have thought of to make sure that your habits in the kitchen keep you and your family healthy.

1. Always Wash Your Produce

You should always make sure that you wash your fruit and vegetables before you eat them, no matter where they come from. If you purchase your fruit and vegetables from the supermarket, they could contain pesticides or chemicals that have been sprayed on them while they were still in the field. Plus, you never know how many people have picked up that apple before you bought it.

Even fruit and vegetables that have been bought from your local farmer’s market need to be washed before eating. A lot of the time, they can pick up bacteria during transportation.

2. Store Your Food Properly

Many people are not aware that different foods need to be stored in different ways and not always in the way that you think.

There are certain foods that should be stored in the fridge like milk and meats. This is because the cold environment helps to slow down the natural growth of germs and keep the foods safe for longer. Dry foods such as grains should be stored in a cool and dark place that is free of warmth and moisture.

The best way to find out how to store foods properly is to check the directions on the package. Most of the time, you can find how to properly store the food (e.g. “keep refrigerated,” etc.).

3. Check The Expiration Date

There’s nothing worse than getting home after buying groceries to find that one of your food items is out of date. Always make sure that you are checking the expiration dates on any type of perishable food items, including meat and dairy. Consuming foods that are out of date can give you the risk of foodborne illness.

4. Cook Food Properly

It is always important to make sure that you do not eat raw or undercooked meat, eggs and poultry. Raw and undercooked food often contains salmonella, which is a type of food poisoning that is difficult to deal with and can cause you to become dehydrated.

When you cook food, make sure that you are paying attention to the length of the time that you are cooking the food as well as the temperature. You should also make sure that you know what fully cooked meat and eggs look like.

5. Wash The Equipment – And Your Hands

Even though this should be a given, you should always make sure that you are preparing your food on a clean surface and with clean equipment – with clean hands. Anything that your food will touch should be washed and sanitized to prevent cross-contamination and the potential for foodborne illnesses.

The same goes for your hands. You touch a thousand things each day and there is no telling how many germs and bacteria you come into contact with. You definitely do not want those germs and bacteria in your food!
