Juicing On A Budget

One of the biggest excuses I get from people is that they “can’t” juice because it’s too “expensive.”

In my opinion juicing fresh vegetables is a lot cheaper than paying a hospital bill. Prevention is key to disease and it’s always easier and cheaper to prevent a disease than to cure it.

Here are some tips on how to juice on a budget.

1. Juice Seasonal Produce

Often times seasonal produce is cheaper and it’s nice to change up the vegetables from time to time.

2. Buy in Bulk

I recently did this. I was so tired of going to the same grocery stores. I wanted produce that was certified organic, fresh and locally grown. So I did some research and found a great warehouse type of location in San Diego called Specialty Produce. This place was awesome. I walked into a refrigerator like room and picked out organic produce that came straight from a local farm. I really love supporting our local farms here in San Diego.

The best part was that I bought great produce for a fraction of the price that I would have had to spend at other grocery stores.

Do some research. If you don’t have a Specialty Produce type of place around your area then ask your local grocery if you can buy bulk produce. Often times bulk produce is less expensive.

3. Juice Frequently

If you need to save some money but still want to juice, try juicing 1-2 times a day instead of 3 times a day. Or try juicing everyday rather than 2 times a day. Remember juicing frequently is better than not juicing at all.

4. Add More Base

With every juice that I make, I start out with a base. A base is something that you add to get your juice going and creating sort of a foundation for the rest of your ingredients.

Vegetables like celery, romaine lettuce and carrots are inexpensive even when they are organic. These vegetables also produce a lot of juice, so you’re actually saving money.

5. Check Your Pulp

Also juice your pulp a couple of times. With some of the juicers out there on the market they don’t even juice dark leafy vegetables, they almost just chop it up so check your pulp. If your pulp feels and look choppy and wet throw it back it the juicer.

6. Check the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen

Do your research. Check out the dirty dozen and clean fifteen. These foods are rated according to EWG’s 2012 Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce  for the most and least pesticide residue. 

Remember ALWAYS try to aim for certified organic. Pesticides are chemicals and when you juice vegetables you are instantly absorbing the juice and you sure don’t want pesticide residue in your juice.

 Why Juice?

Going on a simple 3-5 day juice fast is a great way to detox your body. When you juice dark green vegetables you are instantly getting high amount of nutrients and vitamins.
