I used to be an omnivore until the age of 34 when I was diagnosed with cancer.  After almost a full year of biopsies, surgery and a lot of reading, I decided I needed more raw fruits and vegetables in my life and I slowly transitioned to becoming a raw vegan.

Now, four years later, I’ve spent three of those years learning about a new way of eating, living and connecting with myself once again.

Through this journey in becoming raw/vegan, I have learned about the power of juicing and I have experienced firsthand how it has transformed my life physically, mentally and spiritually.

Although my juicing journey may have included a switch to a high raw (no animal product) diet, I have counselled many of my coaching clients to integrate more raw, living foods into their lifestyle through juicing and green smoothies.

I never realized how much I loved juicing and how good it was for my body until I stopped doing it and started up again. No matter what your diet looks like, you can benefit from the power of juicing clean foods to clean up your own body, mind and spirit.

Here are 5 Incredible Reasons to Immediately Start Juicing (From hydration to toxin removal):

1. Juicing vegetables forces you to be mindful of what you put into your body.

It takes a little more prep time to make a juice than it does to make a green smoothie, however, I challenge you to time how long it takes you to prepare and wash your vegetables and put them through the juicer.  You may discover that it’s pretty close to cooking your favorite egg sandwich in the morning.  

After a few days of having one juice, you may start to feel the immediate results of increased energy, lightness on your feet, improved sleep, and enlightened taste buds. In addition, you will also be aware of what else you choose to put in your body throughout the day. In fact, you may find yourself making healthier choices throughout the day because you are starting to feel the results of having your daily juice.

This is what Joshua Rosenthal, founder of the Institute For Integrative Nutrition, refers to as “crowding out,” thereby, your usual unhealthy habits get replaced by healthier habits based on one small change like juicing.

Let’s face it, the quality of food is decreasing, your life is getting even busier and there is a new shift in the world with becoming more health aware.  Even if you follow the SAD (Standard American Diet), you will benefit from one green juice in your daily routine – and it won’t hurt you!

There is something in plants that, as humans, we need to survive and that is oxygen. All green plants have chlorophyll, which is a powerful blood builder, which, according to Kris Carr in her book Crazy Sexy Diet, can also be thought of as the blood of the plant that will help heal and detoxify your blood.

The chlorophyll will strengthen your immune system, improve circulation, ease inflammation and will soon become your “liquid oxygen.”  Additionally, the positive influence of chlorophyll on health has been studied throughout history and in 1950, Dr. F. Howard Westcott discovered that if you integrate just 100 milligrams of chlorophyll into your diet, it will neutralize bad breath, body odor, menstrual odors and foul smelling urine and stools. Now, who can’t benefit from that?!

3. Making time for yourself reminds you that you ARE important.

How many times have you done something for someone else in your day? If you are a busy mother or father or grandparent, you know how easy it is to put everyone else’s needs ahead of your own. This fact alone makes juicing even more important for you.  

Think of your daily juice as your gift to yourself – the gift of health. When working with clients and even my past relationship with food, I have realized that we often want to reward with food. Whether you are rewarding your children or yourself with a “treat” of something sweet or salty, you are forgetting that you can reward yourself with healthy food.

You will soon discover that the cravings, afternoon slumps and restless nights become few and far between the more you start doing for yourself and the more nutrition you start feeding your cells. This is a form of self-love; take the time to show yourself some love so you can continue giving to others.

Life is filled with stress, junk food, caffeine, meat and toxic air and chemicals that our bodies must constantly work hard to alkalize in order to protect your organs and blood from becoming overly acidic. Therefore, you need a constant supply of alkaline food to neutralize of abundance of acid generating in your body.  

One way to do this is by consuming fresh juice, green leafy vegetables in their raw, living state and blending them into a smoothie.When too much acidic food (sugar, simple carbs, alcohol, caffeine, processed and packaged food-like items) is eaten, the body, blood and urine become acidic and then the blood purifying organs (spleen, liver, heart, kidneys) become overworked and stressed out, making them weak and susceptible to disease.  

Dr. Gabriel Cousens in his book, There is a Cure for Diabetes, explains that your entire body becomes susceptible to disease because the toxins cannot be cleaned out and therefore will find a place to collect in the joints, leaving you to suffer from arthritis or gout.

These toxins will find their way out of your body as well. Possibly through the skin, giving you symptoms of eczema, acne, sores or boils and it has been posited that being acidic also contributes to other diseases like cancer, gallstones, gallbladder infections, impotency in men, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, asthma and allergies.  

Since the majority of people are overly acidic, a fresh juice and alkaline foods will help keep your organs protected and your internal cleaning system working optimally to keep you healthy and feeling great.

5. Rehydrate!

It is estimated that approximately 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated and within 37% of those Americans, the trigger to notify you of thirst is so weak from the dehydrations that it is mistaken for hunger.  

Dr. Gabriel Cousens further explains that dehydration is not only causing you to eat more, but even mild dehydration will slow down your metabolism by as much as 3%, thereby leading to weight gain. Dr. Cousens explains that water is a universal solvent and anti-oxidant, which is what makes nutrition work for all living things on the planet.  A plant absorbs its nutrients when you water it, just like you will absorb and dissolve nutrients in your bloodstream when you hydrate yourself.

Since fresh juice enters the bloodstream almost immediately or within 15 minutes of consuming, you are giving yourself the gift of hydration. This will help your body and cells stay hydrated while fighting off any signs or symptoms of dehydration, which can even be attributed to that mid-afternoon slump.

In fact, Dr. Cousens explains that even a 2% drop in body water can create that “fuzzy” head feeling, create short-term memory difficulties, challenge you in calculating basic math and even lose focus on the computer screen.  

Therefore, adding juicing to your daily healthy lifestyle will add in more hydration so you can continue to keep your body fueled, be able to fight off that mid-afternoon slump, think clearly and experience life the way it is intended.
