Is A Juicing Detox Right For You?

When most people think about a detox, they think about juicing.
There are many benefits to juicing, such as increasing nutrient intake, alkalizing the body and reducing inflammation. But how do you know if juicing is right for you or not?
Here are some good questions to ask yourself before starting a juice fast or detox program:
1. What’s your pH?
It’s easy to get caught up in trends and fads, but there is no panacea to health – not even alkalinity. Yet, you’re more than likely seeing an onslaught of “pH balanced” products like alkaline water, alkalizing supplements and more.
But – before you start concocting juice recipes to improve your alkalinity, doesn’t it make sense to test your pH first?
You can get urine pH test strips for about $10 online and test your morning urine. Your morning urine pH should be 7.0-7.4. If it’s far below this (i.e. under 6) then your current lifestyle is lending itself to too much blood acidity, which can increase inflammation and make it harder for your body to function properly.
2. What’s your gender?
Since most juice detoxes and fasts put your body in a major caloric deficit (meaning that you’re consuming far less calories than you’re burning), you have to be careful, especially depending on your gender.
Unlike men, women tend to be much more sensitive to negative energy balances and thus should be careful with how they go about their juice detox. A simple way to add more calories to your juice plan is to include healthy, calorie-dense ingredients such as avocados and/or coconut oil.
3. What’s the after-plan?
I assume that you don’t plan to consume juice exclusively forever, right? To be successful with any detox plan, it’s equally important that you have a long-term nutrition plan.
Get with a qualified nutrition coach to map out a lifestyle-integrated meal plan that you can sustain once your juice detox subsides.
After you’ve considered the above questions, you should be able to decide if a juicing detox is appropriate for you at this time and how to adapt it to your needs. When in doubt, again, get with a coach and determine what course of action is best for your body type and lifestyle.
