I’m Giving Up These “Healthy” Habits – You Should Too

I am a holistic health and life coach. I am obviously passionate about health and well-being. I help clients achieve their optimal health every day. I aim to live as healthy as possible. I have healed myself from chronic headaches and chronic hip pain. I have healed from emotional issues, including depression, anxiety and chronic self-hate.
Nutrition, holistic health and healing are a major part of my life. Yet, there are so many rules and so much advice in the holistic health movement that at times I start going crazy! My head goes off spinning, I get confused, I start to compare myself and I feel bad. There is NOTHING healthy about this!
So I am done. I am done with some things that health websites, magazines and trends are telling me I should be doing.
Here are the 8 “healthy” habits I’m never doing again.
1. No more food rules.
Sure, food rules are necessary when you have a food allergy or another medical condition – I don’t promise that I will never do a cleanse when my body needs it. But I will never ever categorize foods as safe and unsafe. I aim to eat real, whole-foods (that come from nature) and are preferably organic, but I won’t freak out if I intentionally or unintentionally step off the track.
2. No more comparing diets.
When I became vegetarian, I didn’t really look at it as a diet or a lifestyle, I just didn’t want to eat animals anymore. Later I learned about nutrition and I started comparing like crazy. I found the raw vegan diet and I thought it was the holy grail. Then I learned about all the different kinds of raw diets and began to rank them.
I tried to compare dietary theories and, while learning about hundreds of them during my studies, I got a bit confused too. Many seemed amazing, some seemed unacceptable. But I had to realize that no one diet fits for all. Whole foods all the way, baby! But within that, there are so many variations depending on the person, his/her life circumstances, overall health, age, physical activities, ethical choices and more.
3. No more green smoothies.
You heard me. Green smoothies are amazing – they are full of nutritional benefits. I suggest them to my friends and clients. But I do not like them. I’ve never liked shakes or smoothies, so this healthified version wasn’t a fun alternative for me, it was a nightmare. I forced myself to drink them for months, but I hated them so much that I didn’t even experience the physical benefits due to the emotional distress it was causing. Then I realized smoothies were just not for me. There are so many healthy options I love and can eat instead. I will stick to green juices and salads.
4. No more obsessively reading labels.
At one point in my life, I was obsessed with calories. Later, I got into nutrition content. In either case, I’ve found it unnatural, destructive and unhealthy to compulsively check the labels of everything. To begin with: real food doesn’t need labels. Broccoli or an apple doesn’t come with a label because they are real, whole foods just as Mother Nature intended – no labels, just pure nutrition, especially when organic.
When it comes to processed food, labels become more important and helpful/ For example, I will know if they are vegan or include anything I am allergic to. Still, I will only check labels when necessary and will opt for label-free food as much as possible.
5. No more excuses.
I don’t have time, I don’t have the money, I don’t have a support system and so on. Yes, I do have my excuses too not to follow up on an idea, follow my own advice or make a change. The truth is, if I really want it, I can figure it out. The truth is, sometimes, I don’t want to because I am simply not ready. And I accept that.
It is okay not to be ready or to not want something enough. However, it stops being an excuse then. It is not an ’I want to do this, but…’ Instead, it is a ’I don’t want to do this’ or a ’I am not quite ready to do this yet’ choice. Everything else is ’figureoutable.’
6. No more comparing myself to others.
Everyone is different and we can’t compare each other. It is pointless to compare myself to airbrushed images on magazines – even if they are magazines on running, fitness or healthy eating. There is no point to comparing myself to other ’real people’ on the magazines. I don’t know how they feel about themselves. I don’t know their lives. Even if they are close friends, I can never know their full story. I am me, perfect and unique just the way I am. And that’s enough.
7. No more looking for the quick fix.
During my healing journey, all I wanted was a quick fix – a magic pill or an amazing therapist who could fix my life. Later, I realized there was no single magical solution. Now I know that life is a journey. Healing and transformation takes time. New things will pop up. You never arrive, you only transform. Life is magical with its ups and downs. I am not looking for a quick fix, because it doesn’t exist. I am willing to experience. I am willing to take steps forward. I am willing to transform. I am willing to be patient.
8. No more craving perfection.
No matter where I look, I see perfect images. I am not only talking about popular magazines or chick flicks, but also health websites, blogs by amazing fellow coaches and inspiring documentaries.
Magazines may promise you the perfect look with a fancy lipstick, whereas health websites may promise you the perfect health through their vitamins and cleanses. But perfection doesn’t exist. Everyone has a different definition of it and even if we reach it, we just want more. Healing, health, happiness and freedom are not destinations where we can stop the work and hang our legs in the ocean forever. There is always room for growth and healing. The process itself is beautiful. So I will embrace the process instead of rushing it to an unrealistic perfect destination.
