Why Am I Not Pooping While On My Juice Fast?

This is one of the most common questions I get as people begin their juicing journeys.

“Drew, I haven’t pooped in like 3 days? Is something wrong?”

Now, first of all, I want you to know that this happens to a lot of people. You are definitely not alone in this.

The reason you are not pooping is because of a couple different factors.

  • You have put yourself on a massive caloric deficit.
    • This both shocks your body and gives it a lot less substance to process. Your body literally does not have nearly as much to get rid of, so it makes sense that you wouldn’t be having as many bowel movements.
  • By only drinking juice, you have taken all of the fiber out of your diet.
    • If a lot of fiber makes you poop a lot, think about what no fiber does to your body.

These are easy fixes.

There are a lot of things you can take for this, but for today I want to give you my favorite 3:

1. Natural Calm from Natural Vitality

This is my absolute favorite magnesium supplement. Whenever I’m feeling a little “backed up”, I drink this with warm water, like a tea, and I find that my body is able to instantly relax and “flow”. (sorry if that’s a little too much info for ya 🙂

2. Green Tea Extract

Now this is a sure fire thing. Green Tea Extract has caffeine in it, which has a laxative effect. It is also a diuretic. So if you need to get things moving, you can either have a little coffee, or you can go with this option, which I prefer.

3. Apple Pectin

Here is the gold nugget of the list. Apple Pectin is a fiber that your body can NOT absorb. This means that your body will carry it through your digestive system and get rid of it as waste. This is really great for relieving constipation and even firming up stool if you are experiencing diarrhea. A lot of fruits contain pectin, but it is found in the highest quantities in apples.

Some of you may still be a little worried about juice fasting and constipation. This is normal and I’m so glad that you have been asking me questions like this.

Yes, you may see a decrease in bowel movements during a juice fast. That is why it is vitally important to not juice fast for too long and get back to eating live, healthy foods after your body is done detoxing.

Remember, we’re in this together.
