Breaking Through Hypo-Thyroid Disorder
I was 18 years old when I first found out I had hypo-thyroid disorder. Full of mixed emotions, my first thought was, "Why me?" I was young, active, and thought I was healthy. How could this even happen? As horrible as it was, I found relief in the fact that...
I had an excuse for having trouble managing my weight all those years.
Trial and error treatment to replace my thyroid hormone began. The effect of one change in dosage would take months to see; I was in tears every time the Doctor said I had to try something different. I was so lethargic I felt like I needed to eat for fuel; little did I know that all the wrong foods were hurting me even more. The self-pity and weight gain eventually spiraled out of control. It sent me into a self-destructive pattern of drastic attempts at fad diets, with the restrictions only leading to a viscous cycle of occasional emotional eating, and back to the strict diets to make up for it.
The guilt, confusion, and frustration were quite frankly, kicking my butt!
Two years and a million blood tests later we finally figured out the proper replacement hormone doses and I still felt something wasn't right. I did more tests, and sure enough other levels were out of sync. My Doctor contemplated putting me on more medicines, but I felt the symptoms seemed to overlap with too many possible conditions. It was too overwhelming so I began to explore my options. (By no means am I saying not to take medicine if your physician determines you need it. I still take thyroid replacement hormone. What I am saying is that they'd have me ingesting a small pharmacy if I didn't take initiative and look for complimentary lifestyle changes to balance out my body.)
I realize now that I've used my condition as an excuse to engage in destructive talk and behavior. Have you ever made an excuse and hid behind it? I knew I was tired of hiding. We all do this, and it has to stop. The human mind is a powerful thing. You're brain doesn't know the difference between what you tell it and the truth. If you tell yourself or others every day, "I am having a hard time getting in-shape because of _____" it accepts it as the truth. Negative talk, blame, and self-limiting beliefs do nothing but restrict your innate capability. Regardless of your condition/excuse(no time, too much work, hypo-thyroid etc.), to get results you have to TAKE ACTION. Action #1 should be: Assume responsibility, and check your excuses at the door.
Know that the spirit, mind, and body all function as one.
If one part is broken; you as a whole are broken. Quick fixes are like putting a Band-Aid on a broken bone, without aligning everything on the inside, you'll never heal properly even if you appear to be healed on the outside. From this I learned that there is a huge difference between just being "in-shape" and being "healthy". I knew I wanted both. So my quest for holistic nutrition began, and it is saving my life every day...
