How To Relieve Your Seasonal Allergies Without Medicine

If you are like me, then spring means allergies; this is because one of the biggest allergy triggers is pollen.

If you live in a place like Atlanta Georgia, these tiny yellow grains are released into the air by trees, grasses and weeds, which means a tidal wave of pollen to invade any and everything, including your nose and eyes.

This attack causes your immune system to go into overdrive, which increases allergy symptoms like stuffy nose, ears and sinuses, inflamed itchy eyes, headaches, sore throat and even difficulty breathing.

So many of us suffer from seasonal allergies and some of us suffer year-round. The easy route would be to go to your nearest pharmacy and get some allergy medicine, but for me, this route brings other issues that make allergy medicine not worth it at all.

In efforts to help relieve my allergies, I looked for natural ways to take care of myself. What amazed me was the results I saw. This is why I truly believe that our food can and should serve as medicine.

As soon as I realized this, I found that I didn’t have to suffer from allergies anymore, whether from pollen or indoor or outdoor toxins.

Suffering allergies doesn’t have to be inevitable or chronic. By employing these simple daily health habits, you can at the very least reduce and relieve the allergy symptoms.

Here are 6 of my tested habits that you can employ today to help you with your seasonal allergies:

1. Lemon Water

I have been talking about lemon water for a while now; this is because it’s a great and potent elixir for overall health.

During allergy season, add 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric powder and lemon to your water and drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This elixir jump starts your digestion and gets your liver working to flush out toxins, including any pollen that you may have breathed in during the night.

By doing this every morning, you allow your body the ability to flush and refresh every morning which thusly can lessen your allergy symptoms.

2. Drink A Green Smoothie For Breakfast

By replacing my oatmeal and heavy breakfast with my green smoothie, it helps me get through the day. I drink this smoothie after my lemon water every morning. I am able to go bold into the thicket of pollen with very minimal symptoms. Here is my recipe:

Ingredients:

  • ½ of avocado or 1 heaping tbsp of MCT or coconut oil (I prefer the avocado)
  • 3 large handfuls of spinach
  • 1-2 tbsp of cilantro
  • 1 apple
  • ½ cup kefir
  • ½ coconut water or aloe vera juice
  • 1-2 tbsp of hemp seeds
  • 1 scoop of Organifi
  • 1 scoop of protein powder (this is optional)
  • A few cubes of ices for desired temp (optional)

Instructions: Blend and enjoy!

3. Probiotics

Probiotics are more and more suggested as a health supplement and studies are looking to see if probiotics may help asthma and allergy sufferers.

When I take probiotics consistently during allergy season, my symptoms are significantly less; I would imagine this is because my gut has a protective barrier that helps minimize the bad bacteria, which decreases inflammation in the gut, since the bulk of the immune system is housed in the gut.

I personally take Fitlite Biotic Balance Probiotics, but Cultrelle and Pearl are also great brands to get you started. If you decide to begin taking probiotics, it may take some time for you to notice a difference, just be patient and consistent and you will begin to feel and see results not just with your allergy symptoms, but also in your overall health.

4. Drink More Water

As a health coach, I consistently stress hydration to my clients. Keeping your body hydrated is key, especially during allergy season. There are parts of your body that cannot function properly without moisture; your lungs are a great example. When your nose gets dry, you have more mucus, this is because the brain pumps more mucus to keep the air sent to the lungs moist.

By drinking lots of water, not only do you help your body flush out the pollen via urine, but you also keep your mucus membranes moist, which calms the brain and lowers inflammation.

Along with the drinking more water, you can also use a nasal wash, which helps thin the mucus in the nasal cavity, removing bacteria, allergens and other irritants to relieve your symptoms.

5. Take Licorice Root Supplement

I recently found this amazing supplement; it was actually suggested to me by a client who suffers from allergies as well.

This supplement naturally and gently softens the mucus in the body that is then discarded by the body. This relieved congestion and clearance of my sinuses helped me no longer feel like I was inside of a fish bowl.

The supplement that both my client and I use is the Vitamin Shoppe brand licorice root supplement for $5.99.

6. Do Some Yoga

I love yoga, it is my way of treating my body to a getaway for 60-90 minutes, so imagine my delight when I found that yoga helped my allergy symptoms.

While I do not practice yoga daily, I can tell you that that yoga helped my immune system to calm down and stop attacking the pollen, which in turn calmed the inflammation and mucus. Can you say awesome?

Simply put, practicing yoga with the intention of relaxing the nervous system through deep breathing is a great and beneficial way to decrease allergy symptoms naturally.

These are some of my go-to holistic approaches to battling my allergies. I can tell you that while I still experience some symptoms, I am able to go through the spring season with very little discomfort.
