How To Make Peace With Your Body, No Matter What Size You Are

I remember a time when I used to look in the mirror and was totally mortified with what I saw. I hated the way my thighs were touching, how my bloated belly stuck out and my way-too-small boobs.

Did you know that a shocking 91% of all American women and 54% of teenage girls ages 13-19 feel dissatisfied with their bodies?

And I was one of them.

Despite being a size 6 most of my adult life, I never really felt happy with my body and inside my own skin. I was working very hard on creating the “perfect” body in the hopes that I would finally feel good and be at peace with myself.

Creating a healthy body image is essential for our physical and emotional well-being as well as for our overall happiness and life satisfaction. Moving from being at war with your body to accepting, appreciating and yes, even liking your body is an inside job and you can start taking these 4 steps right now towards doing so, no matter what size or shape you are:

1. Use Positive Affirmations

Make a list of all the things your body does for you and what you are thankful for. For example, how it carries you from place to place every single day, how it performed the miracle of childbirth, or it’s incredible self-healing powers. Come up with your top 3 and stick them anywhere and everywhere you can see them to help you shift your mindset from body-horror to body-wonder.

2. Stop Comparing Yourself

Comparing yourself to the airbrushed photo models you see in fitness or fashion magazines is poison to the soul (and body). If you want to make peace with your body and you know that you struggle with comparing yourself and wishing your body would look a little more like theirs, then stop getting these magazines. Go on a women’s magazine-detox until you can look at the picture and see them for what they truly are: an artificially produced, mis-representation of today’s women(hood).

3. Ditch The Diet And Love Yourself Up With Food

Many women find themselves trapped in the binge-dieting cycle, eating for emotional comfort or stress release and then going into diet or over-exercising mode trying to prevent potential weight-gain. Letting go of emotional and binge eating and starting to use food to nurture your body, mind and soul is essential in order to feel good in your own skin.

4. Have Fun And Celebrate Yourself

Go out and play! Do something that sets your heart on fire. Do it, even if your inner self-critic tells you a million reasons why you shouldn’t. Do it anyway and have fun with it. Your body is not only a miracle, it is a joyful playground and it’s your job to explore it, take care of it and enjoy it!
