organifi web22

I am so excited to bring in a special guest today. My friend, Mikhaila came to sunny San Diego – all the way from Hawaii – to hang out and share some of her amazing recipes with you today!

She’s the founder of SuperSexyRaw, which is a mouth-watering website for all things RAW and healthy! I know you’re going to LOVE her recipes! They are soooooo good! I couldn’t stop eating all the good food she was making!!! Thankfully it was REAL food to fuel my body, phewwww!

First we had to shop for our ingredients and what better place than my FAVORITE local market – Specialty Produce in San Diego! I love the people that work there. You can tell they really care about what they are providing to the community. And getting local produce is my #1 pick when shopping. Whenever you can, I encourage you to shop local. Support the peeps in your neighborhood that are working to make a difference. We’re in this together, right? 🙂

Once we loaded our cart up with all the healthy food, it was time to COOK!

But before I go into the recipes, check out the crazy benefits of the dishes that we made. (Well, Mikhaila made them… I ate them!)

Who said healthy couldn’t taste absolutely amazing???

It CAN and it SHOULD!

You ready for this? 🙂

Benefits Of Ingredients

Let’s take a look at the benefits of some of our main ingredients!

Sweet Potatoes

The rich orange color of sweet potatoes is a sign of their high carotenoid content. Carotenoids help to strengthen the immune system, are potent antioxidants, improve eyesight and also help the body absorb vitamin A. Not surprisingly, sweet potatoes contain EXTREMELY high levels of vitamin A (22,000 IU!).

Leeks are packed with vitamin K and the flavonoid, kaempferol, which are both important for cardiovascular and neuro health. Studies have shown that kaempferol has potential to prevent islamic strokes and inflammation in the brain. Who knew leeks packed such a nutritional punch?

Olive Oil

Olive oil contains monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) which are a healthy fat that you need in your diet. MUFAs have been shown to lower “bad” cholesterol levels, support good blood flow/clotting and may even help stabilize insulin and blood sugar levels.

From the common cold to heart disease to cancer, garlic has got your back! This incredible superfood contains antioxidants, selenium, vitamin C and B6, antiviral and antibacterial properties that have been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce carcinogenic chemicals in meat, decrease risk of stomach ulcers, fight several different types of cancer, help prevent heart disease and reduce inflammation.

Onions are an easy way to boost immunity as they contain powerful phytochemicals and vitamin C. People have used this root veggie successfully for centuries  to combat infections and inflammation in the body. Compounds in onions have also been studied for their role in preventing cancer.

Once upon a time, spices were the only “pharmaceuticals” people used to fight symptoms of illness in the body. Coriander  contains strong essential oil compounds, vitamin C and minerals that give it the ability to decrease inflammation, lower cholesterol, aid digestion, prevent diarrhea and nausea, improve blood pressure, reduce allergy symptoms and strengthen bones.

Another spice whose popularity dates back thousands of years, cumin is especially good at aiding digestion and improving immunity. Many studies point to cumin as an immune-system booster making it an important spice for preventing and/or helping one overcome colds and other illnesses quickly. It may even be helpful in preventing several types of cancer.

Smoked Paprika

Paprika is said to be particularly beneficial for your skin. Paprika contains a good dose of vitamins, beta-carotene and iron which have been shown to improve/lighten complexion. These nutrients also serve to prevent signs of aging and acne. The antibacterial properties in paprika may combat internal and external infections caused by bacteria.

I love this spice so much that I made my own supplement! Check it out here. Turmeric is one of the most studied spice’s in the world. It is often called a medicinal magician and a great way to combat inflammation. Turmeric has an active ingredient called curcumin and is the main spice in curry. It has amazing antioxidant and since turmeric is an antiinflammatory, it is often used to help relieve inflammation for arthritis, muscle sprains and other types of injuries. It has also been said that turmeric may prevent and even slow cancer growth.

Don’t think for a minute that cinnamon is simply a flavor spice! Cinnamon contains antiseptic, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Research has shown it to be effective in fighting E Coli. It may also help combat yeast infections (said to be deadly top drug-resistant yeast infections!), aid weight loss, regulate blood sugar and cholesterol and relieve arthritic pain.

Bay Leaves

Although bay leaves are not the most common ingredient in the kitchen, they are gaining popularity because of their many benefits. Bay leaves are potent detoxifiers and have been shown to slow down signs of aging, speed healing, soothe inflammation and aid digestion.

Carrots are known for their high vitamin A content which helps them flush the body of toxins, protect and promote good eyesight, prevent infection, promote healthy skin and hair and reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke. A study done at a Harvard University showed that people who ate more than 6 carrots a week had a reduced risk of stroke than those who hardly ate any carrots.

Dates are one of the sweetest fruits you can find and are packed with fiber, potassium, copper manganese, magnesium and even a little vitamin B6. They are excellent for promoting good digestion and regular bowel movements as well as cleaning out the colon and small intestine. Dates are also a favorite among pregnant women as some studies suggest that daily consumption of dates will reduce time spent in early labor.

Tomatoes are one of the most frequently used veggies (or fruits, depending on who you ask!) in America and yet few people know of their many health benefits. LiveStrong calls tomatoes a “superfood”  as they contain a special antioxidant called lycopene that has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate and other cancers. Tomatoes also contain good levels of vitamin C which is a crucial vitamin for good immunity.

Cilantro is full of phytonutrients and antioxidants and is a great source of  nutrients like fiber, magnesium and manganese. It is a potent detoxifier and may also help to rid the body of colds and viruses. Cilantro is also useful as an anti-inflammatory and has been used to help soothe symptoms of arthritis.

Mixed greens

No one can deny it – a diet full of leafy greens and veggies promotes longevity, weight loss, strong immunity, brain function and overall excellent health.

Radishes are an easy root veggie to grow in your own garden because they only take about a month to go from seed to full radish! Root veggies are important for good digestion, cardiovascular health and prevention of illness. Radishes stimulate bile production which is important for organ health and digestion.

Sauerkraut  is a superfood for your health because it contains tons of probiotics that help to balance your microbiome. A balanced gut is a healthy gut and a healthy gut means a HEALTHY YOU! Some studies suggest it may also have anti-cancer properties. Most cultures include fermented foods into their diet daily as they improve digestion, boost immunity and optimize overall well being.

Avocados are an incredible food that I eat regularly! They contain healthy fats, folate, antioxidants, vitamin E and oleic acid. Healthy fats are vital fuel for the cells in your body and promote good neurological health. Folate is important for pregnant women as they reduce the risk of the baby having neurological defects. It is also important for good heart health.

Lemons contain pectin, which has been shown to help reduce cravings. Lemons also have an alkalizing/detoxifying/cleansing effect on the body which makes them helpful for weight loss and overall good health. They are rich in antioxidants, antivirals anti-inflammatories, flavonoids, potassium and vitamins.

Beets are full of potassium, iron, vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, manganese, folate AND zinc! They are known as an excellent liver support and cleanser. Your liver performs over 300 vital metabolic functions and is especially vital to keeping your blood clean and working properly.

Microgreens are any green vegetable or herb that has edible leaves. The health benefits vary depending on the type you are eating but they are always a good source of micronutrients and antioxidants.

Benefits Of Fueling Your Body With REAL Food

You’ve heard me say it a million times and no doubt you will hear me say it a million more times – but I just can’t help it. Because it’s important!

You are what you eat, yes. But even more than that…

So when you are reaching for food to FUEL your body and help you feel your best, there are some things to consider.

Where is your food coming from? (is it from the ground or made in a factory?)

How does it make you feel after you eat it? (are you energized or do you need a nap?)

Is it supporting your goals? (vibrant skin, lean body, mental sharpness…)

And really, all of this ties into your gut, which you may already know if you’ve been part of our community for a while now.

When your gut is out of whack, your ability to absorb and use the health-giving ingredients you’re consuming diminishes. Oh HECK NO! No time for that! 🙂

Your gut can become “off” due to a ton of factors, but 4 of the most common are:

  • Poor diet (not enough real, whole foods)
  • Stress (inability to cope in a healthy way)
  • Lack of sleep (this is a BIGGIE!)
  • Antibiotic use (which kills the good guys along with the bad)

So as you take in these amazing gifts from Mother Nature, consider the above 4 factors and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. I promise you that when you honor and support your body and its needs, it will love you back! And you’re worth that. You deserve to feel incredible every single day.

Now let’s get to those recipes! My mouth is watering as I type this, no joke!
