How To Grow Into A Leader

Becoming a leader is within you as a person. It may be hidden deep within your soul, but you’ve got some part of you that is dying to lead others, to lift them up and teach them something you are passionate about. If you are a mother, the need to lead is naturally fulfilled. You have the opportunity to lead your kids down a path called life. A pretty big job.

Leaders understand that change is inevitable. It happens over time and it is more often than not a positive occurrence if you allow it to be in your mind.

Change is hard. It is scary and causes your deepest demons to come to the top of your mind. Over time, your brain has developed a box of occurrences that have happened in your life. It’s like a safeguard, a wall. If you’ve been hurt before, the wall comes up at any sign that the occurrence may happen again. This could be a lid for you as a leader. You have to break through the barrier that is your fear to lead others.

We call these barriers lids following the “law of the lid” by John Maxwell. There are things you can personally do to lift your lid and become a better leader.

Here are some examples:

1. Look back at your experiences in life and reflect. What did you learn? How can you grow? What would you change if you could do it over?

2. Find a coach/mentor that has been through things you’re going through and talk to them about how they dealt with the situation. Ask for guidance as you explore your own personal journey.

3. Do something beyond yourself. A leader recognizes that to lead, you must have a following and to have a following, you must care and appreciate others.

Here’s one thing to remember as a growing leader or someone who wants so badly to lead but doesn’t know how, yet…

Whatever you accomplish will be restricted or propelled by your ability to lead others.

Invest in yourself and your leadership abilities first. Read books, listen to audios, talk to mentors/coaches, go to therapy, create better habits, it all starts with YOU. To be great, you must lead. Developing as a leader is a process and takes time, but that doesn’t mean you have to be perfect to start. Focus on progress, not the perfection.
